Murragh Wilson cup report - a dry night!!!

Wthout the captain, and both opening bowlersthe 1st team aided by some 2nd team players entertained Cockerton in the first round of the Murragh Wilson cup. Bowling first Brownie and Steve Allenby bowled tight with the 1st two overs being maidens and Steve picking up a wicket with a half tracker, a well taken catch by Fez. Brownie would of also taken a wicket but Colin dropped a difficult chance in the slips, his 4 overs went for 14, Steves for 10. Old heads Colin and Dave Edwards then bowled a few overs each and when Dave bowled a slower one he took a simple caught and bowled, Colin also picked up 2 wickets, a straight forward LBW and a good catch by Gary, Fez and Martin bowled 2 overs each to fit the match criteria of 5 bowlers and despite a few wides Fez picked up 2 wickets, a bowled and LBW, his 2 overs went for 10 runs, Martin was unlucky with few edges going through and some good fielding by Davie Edwards and Dave as the keeper taking a difficult throw from the deep rgot a run out, Dave and Colin finished the innings off in between shower breaks to fiish with 2-12 for Colin and 1-11 for Dave. The innings ended on 88-7

The score was definately competitive with the wet grass making runs difficult to get, Geoff and Gary opened and after Dave made the mother of all wrong calls on a no-ball (Im sure we will not hear the last of it) Geoff was caught behind for 7, Colin came in at 3 and was a man in a hurry, he toe-ended a big six but was out bowled, his first dismissal of the season, for 11, Gary was joind by Danny and not for the first time this season it was McGuire Junior who was the main run getter, Gary was out for 11 and Steve joined Danny, together they took the team to the brink of victory, Steve hitting an offside 6 before he was out for 14, Danny continued with his big hits, hitting one over the Sedgefield road and another onto the roof of the neighbouring house, Davie didn'gt trouble the scoring, out for 0, Craig mistimed a pull and was caught for 2 and it left the team needing 3 of the last over, Danny got a single off the first ball but was run out off the 2nd when Dave hit the ball firmly direct to the fielder for an easy run out, Martin joined Dave and after a "YES, NO, WAIT" call just survived a run out and with 2 balls left Dave skied a drive over the mid on fielder to scamper through for the two runs and a victory by 3 wickets, Danny finishing on 38 (3 sixes and 2 fours)

The next round is at home to East Cowton, hopefully to be played the week beginning 16 July 07

WEEK 11

When will we get a dry Saturday????

Amazingly both teams made a start, but no chance of getting finished. The 1st XI reached 59 for 2 in 15 overs and the 2nd XI got to 27 for 1 in 9 overs. No need for further reports this week.

WEEK 10

The 1st XI lost in the table top clash (amazing considering the weather it was played at all) - they lost by 10 runs to Middleton in Teesdale - Sam and Danny performing well with the bat, but just failed to reach the target of 146 - still stay top of the league by 15 points. For the second week running the 2nd XI were beaten by the torrential rain.

Am I going to get a 1st XI report from anyone?? It seems a bit unfair on Dave to have to produce the match reports - it will be much better to get a report from someone playing in the game. PLEASE !!

Following my plea - Nezy has produced his first report - well done - it's really good - keep up the good work:-

1st XI vs. Middleton Teasdale (The top of the Table Clash)

After arriving at Middleton Teasdale via some decent sized puddles, which would put the Skerne in its place, and waiting for the McGuire’s to get themselves unstuck in a Car park Sam for once in a VERY long time won the toss and chose to field, It was decided to play a restricted 30 over a side match instead of 35.

Haughton took to the field and Middleton’s two veteran openers came to the crease. Some tight bowling from Lunny and Neil (Who was called for no balls a few times even though it was because he was slipping over the crease) Middleton’s openers were allowed very little! Although when they had a bad ball they punished it. And on came Jeffrey for Neil. “Come on the Wiley old pro” shouts Sam, a few balls later and a good ball from Jeff is smashed to Nezy at mid-off who yet again drops a dolly. That’s 4 in 2 matches at Middleton. (If I’m not mistaken Nezy moves into Pole position for the Lurpak Trophy!) After showing Haughton that Middleton can play the sweep shot a straight ball from Jeff is skied to Nezy AGAIN at mid-off, (I’m sure there were shouts of “Not him! Not here!”) After 4 attempts the ball was finally clung onto with Nezy on the floor! Gary was heard saying, “Is that ball hot or something?!” It was then time for a bit of Left Arm from Keith Mac! If Middleton didn’t know how to sweep and sweep well, they’d of only knocked about 60!! After some good fielding by Neil and Nezy on the square leg boundary a ball from Keith is skied to Nezy at Deep Square Leg who takes it rather comfortably. With Middleton going at a very healthy rate, thanks to their sweeping skills (Next time we travel to Middleton, I’m taking a brush.) a shot, which hung in the air and had snow on it when it came down landed into the safe hands of Murph who took a difficult catch on the boundary. Middleton finishing on 145 for 4 from 30 overs.

Tea as I’ve came to expect from rivalling teams is always of a high standard with a pretty good selection. Sam and Allenby providing the laughs by torturing Danny about some girlfriends of his who had came to watch! It was now our turn to show what we can do.

With Jeff and Gaz striding out to the middle, all confidence lay on there shoulders! They know each other pretty well, or at least id hope they do. Ha! A steady start from Haughton and a few excellent signature late cuts from Jeff played to perfection! And Jeff’s gone! Bowled by a “decent” ball, nothing special! He’s furious with himself. With Gaz still at the crease on a nice big 0, Simple Sam goes to join him. A few nudges for 2 and a single from Sam brings Gary on strike and guess what?! He’s gone for another nice Duck! I’m sure there’ll be words after! Allenby is pretty fast! After a few scampered singles Allenby is out to a bad ball, Danny is next in, him and his bright pink bat grip Hah! A few singles, nudges and the odd 4 strengthened this partnership until Danny pulled up limping! Allenby, probably the fastest in the team is sent out as a runner much to the home teams disapproval you can here them moaning from the pavi! Danny should get injured a lot more often, be batted superbly hitting most of his runs for fours and he quickly joining Sam in the 40’s until he was bowled for 46! Neil joined Sam at the crease and without facing a ball, he’s sent back for another DUCK! Suicidal runs are not a good idea just yet Neil. Keith is next in and we all know Danger Mouse can hit a mean ball! Sam reached his 50 with a beautiful shot for 4. He just keeps getting better. With Haughton requiring 18 from the last over to win it was going to be a tight one. Sam smashed a six from the first ball over extra cover and its now 12 from 5 balls. Despite loads of encouragement from the pavi Sam was bowled playing across the line. Phil joins Keith at the crease. After a dot ball Phil is out bringing Lunny to the crease, a few swipes and some decent contact off the last 2 balls and the field out the innings finished on 135 and a defeat by 9 runs. At the end of the match Sam presented Gary with a rubber ducky for his amazing batting efforts.

Yes, we lost. But spirit is up tonnes by the effort the team put in. We never once gave up and can look forward to playing against the team in 3rd place on Saturday.

WEEK 9

The weather was the only winner this weekend. Despite getting a start at Great Burden, the match was abandoned with Middleton Tyas on 81 for 4 wickets - Lunny, Keith and Colin in the wickets. No play was possible for the 2nd XI at Lands - what a surprise!!

WEEK 8

1st XI stay top of the league as they continue their winning run with a 22 run victory over Trimdon CCA 1st XI, HCC 2nd XI complete another great weekend for the club with a brilliant 9 wickets victory over Trimdon CCA 2nd XI. Reports to follow;

WEEK 7

1st XI remain top of the league with a comfortable 6 wicket win over Spennymoor. The 2nds XI had another very close game, and came out with a great victory over King James by 13 runs. Reports to follow;

1st XI match report from our foreign guest player - Senor Steve:-

Haughton First XI verse's Spennymoor.

A good win for the first team again against a strong Spennymoor side. Eight Spennymoor wickets were taken by catches and the Haughton batting was extremely strong.

Spennymoor 124 all out.

The first 10 overs were quite ordinary with the Spennymoor openers scoring 2.5 per over. One dropped catch by Haughton's International foreign player Steven Richardson was the only occurrence and he was sure he heard whispers in the field that 'he couldn't catch a plane home never mind a cricket ball'. The openers were broken up by a run out, a precise throw from Neil Wilkinson and a good stump from Sam. Jeffery Maguire came on for Michael Lunn and the catches started to come. After flapping like a penguin on a hot tin roof at a previous chance Gary Maguire caught an amazing one handed diving/stretching catch over his head. Colin Wilkinson came on from the other end and with other great catches from Lunny - a bullet shot which he said he dived to catch but we think the force of the shot just knocked him over. Craig Day - another bullet shot caught from close range. Adam Shann - an easy take. Steven Richardson - actually proved he could catch and held a skied shot. Gaz took another easier catch and Neil Wilkinson caught a easy one but was unlucky that a one handed bullet shot didn't stick. Sam Bainbridge caught one behind in front of his female fan club and Lunny got the only bowled wicket of the day. The tale enders stuck around for a bit but it was a good fielding performance from the whole team. Not sure of the bowling figures - sorry.

Haughton 128 for four.

A great opening partnership from Chris Peacock and Jeffery Maguire ensured Haughton were always on top. Chris playing some text book shots for some cracking boundary's ended up on 18 and has already shown will be a great asset to the club. Jeff ended up on 33, again with some great boundary's and has been in great form since the start of the season. Sam Bainbridge and Colin Wilkinson ensured victory was secure with Colin getting 20 not out and Sam getting 42 but unfortunately getting out with Haughton only needing one to win, trying to showboat with a boundary for the winning shot got a top edge and was caught. His female fan club none too impressed packed up and left. Gary Maguire came in and showed Sam how to do it with a four from his first delivery.

A great performance from the relatively young team and should still be top of the league at the end of the season.
Thanks to the club for letting me play whilst on my holidays and it was nice to see you all again and to catch up.

Best wishes,
Steve.

2nd XI AWAY TO KING JAMES

Martin lost the toss and Haughton were asked to bat on the usual unpredictable and weedy wicket, Ash and Brownie opened and made a steady start adding 25 for the first wicket (though 17 of them were byes and wide’s) before Ash was caught for 4, this brought Paul to the crease and when he was dropped off his first ball he took full advantage of it by driving really well and adding another 28 for the 2nd wicket before he was deceived by a slower ball, and was caught for a season best 22, Steven Allenby was unlucky to see his inside edge rattle the stumps and then Peter attempting a mad run was run out to leave the innings pottering on the brink of another major collapse. Murph took a nasty delivery in his ribs and when Brownie was out to a daisy cutter, Murph caught in the deep and Dave also bowled by a delivery that kept low it didn’t look like 100 would be reached especially when Sturg was out for a golden duck. Thankfully Martin continued with his recent good form with the bat and with Sam Newton in support (not to mention more extras) they passed the 100 total until Martin was out for 18 and the total finished on 103 with extras top scoring on 35.

In the bar another very nice tea was served and when King James came out to bat Martin took the gamble of a brand new ball and told Steven to bowl as fast as he can, the plan worked a treat with King James batsmen just trying to get off the strike. Brownie picked up a wicket in his first over LBW with only Paul appealing and then Steve unsettled the batsmen that much that one kept low and uprooted the off stump. Runs were proving had to find with Fez’s first 5 overs going for only 8 runs, Martin did even better going for 5 runs in his first 5 overs including 3 wickets, two neat catches to Paul behind the stumps and a plumb LBW. Fez finished with 0-14 from his 7 overs and was replaced by Brownie from the pavilion end and when Martin mis-fielded four 4 byes and Brownie hit over his head for six it looked like it would be another defeat, that was until Brownie got his revenge with his own brand of daisy cutter, Martin picked up another 2 wickets, one a neat catch from Ash the other clean bowled but it was left to Brownie to finish off the innings bowling the number 10 to leave Haughton victorious by 12 runs. Martin finished with 5-19, Brownie 3-20 and Steven 1-23 off his 6 hostile overs. Testament to a great team performance with only 9 boundaries off the bat and some sharp fielding (apart from the Captain worried about his looks, too late). King James extras actually totalled 36.

2nd XI CUP MATCH REPORTS:-
FB Howell Cup – Haughton II’s against Cliffe II’s

Haughton made the short trip to Cliffe in the first round of the F B Howell Trophy, batting first both opening bowlers Brownie and Fez kept things tight with their 10 overs only costing 31 runs, in addition Fez took 2 wickets with his variation and Brownie also clean bowled the other opener, When experienced pair Martin and Davie Edwards came on to bowl they kept the run rate down with excellent fielding and tight bowling, only 7 boundaries were scored in the 20 overs bowled, Sam Newton did a fantastic direct hit run out, Martin took a catch off his own bowling and Davie picked up 2 wickets in the dying overs to finish with 2-19 and in a sight almost as rare as a Jam tart being left after tea at Great Burdon Davie Edwards dropped a catch in the deep. The innings closed on 78-7, Steve Allenby and Brownie clearly were in a hurry to finish the match, with Steve particularly batting very well and aggressively in a partnership of 61 in 10 overs he scored 42 including 3 sixes, one of which cleared the pavilion roof, and 5 fours, Brownie was then joined by Phil McMahon and they got the runs needed in quick time, Brownie finishing with 24 not out (2 sixes and a four) and Phil 7, the victory coming in the 16th over.

C Division Cup Haughton II’s against Heighington II’s (allegedly)

With a wicket off his 3rd bowl Brownie broke the deadlock with a neat catch by Sam Newton, enter the Heighington number 3, clearly far too good a played for the C Division he battered the bowling to all parts before being clean bowled by Steve Allenby near the end of the innings for 98 and thus setting up a highly unlikely target of 176 to win.

In reply Steve again showed how he is developing into a very good batsmen when he stayed in for the majority of the innings for a patient 25, Dave supported him when 2 wickets fell but he was out for 14, Reidy got another LBW decision and after Steve was out it was Martin who at last found some form with the bat finishing the innings on 21 not out (1 six and 2 fours) as the innings died a death with the score 66 – 5.

WEEK 6

1st XI go top of the league with a 19 run victory over Witton le Wear. 2nds XI had a very close game, but lost by one wicket in the last over to Cliffe 2nd XI. Reports to follow

Haughton CC v Cliffe

For the second week in a row Captain Martin lost the toss and Haughton were asked to bat. For the second time this season Ashley and Steven Allenby opened the batting and unusually for us got off to a very good start. Stephen played the aggressor playing two very good cover drives for four. The score had moved onto 12 when Stephen trying to play a leg side ball off his hip walked too far across his stumps and was bowled. Reidy entered at number 3 and although looking good went for a duck after sending a top edge up to first slip. Ash and Browny then set about settling the ship putting on 17 for the third wicket. Browny chanced his arm, and was then bowled for 11 trying to drive at a full delivery. Ash was joined at the crease by Jamie and again they did well before a Cliffe bowling change turned the game. Ash and Jamie both fell to the same bowler for 12 and 9 respectively, with Sam Newton becoming his third victim falling for 1. Martin again got a start, before reaching 8 and throwing his wicket away. It was then up to Fez to anchor the tail and finish the innings off. Adam added a useful 10 not out an was assisted by John Sturgeon (2), Peter Whitfield (0) and Deano Brown (3), to bring Haughton’s total up to 78 all out.
Once again a fabulous tea was served by which included the famous “Sturgeon Wraps”, an immense selection of sandwiches and enough jam tarts to keep even Danny McGuire happy.
Fully filled and watered the job of starting the fight back fell on the shoulders of Jamie and Browny. Both bowled at a good pace and Browny was unlucky not to take a very tough caught and bowled chance. After a measured start the Cliffe openers had reached 12-0 after 6 over’s. In the 8th over the breakthrough came, Browny bowling one of his “special tactic” full tosses lured the bowler into a false shot as Johnny took a great high catch in the covers. After this the batsmen became accustomed to the quick stuff and in a double change Martin and Fez continued the job of trying to take quick wickets. After a good opening over from Fez, Martin took Cliffe’s second wicket, bowling the opener with a slower delivery. With tight accurate bowling wickets started to fall in regular intervals, and after 17 overs Cliffe were 39 for 4. At this point it was still anyone’s game to win, a run out and wicket in Fez’s last over of his spell reduced Cliffe to 54 for 6. A tense finish ensued with Jamie taking a wicket in just the 3rd over of his new spell, and Martin grabbing two more wickets. However, the effort was in vain as Cliffe’s last two batsmen saw them home with 11 balls to spare. Jamie finished with 2-24, Browny 1-13, Fez 1-13 and Martin 3-17.
All of the Haughton team put in 110% and on another day the result could have gone our way. Two people must get special mention, one is Peter Whitfield for his great effort behind the stumps in the absence of Dave and Paul, putting his body on the line (literally) and he has the bruises to prove it. The second is “Deano” Brown who after 4 years out of the team made his comeback, taking one catch and nearly holding a certain diving match winner in addition to his cameo batting display.

WEEK 5

Mixed fortunes again this weekend with the 1st XI winning by 7 wickets to go second in the league, but unfortunately the seconds had a "bad day" - losing by 10 wickets in very quick time at Catterick. Reports to follow
Haughton Seconds against Catterick Village

After winning the toss last week Martin lost the toss this week and what a disaster, 8 ducks and only 6 runs off the bat meant Haughton were dismissed for a record league low total of 21, Catterick knocked off the runs in 6 overs without loosing a wicket and after Fez lost his keys in his bag a nice tea was served, and the team got back to Great Burdon to see the 1sts winning again against Cliffe or Chelsea winning the F A Cup.

WEEK 4

Mixed fortunes this weekend with the 1st XI winning by 39 runs and the 2nd XI going down by 86 runs. Reports to follow

Haughton Seconds against Raby Castle

Martin won the toss and had no hesitation in putting Raby Castle into bat, a decision which was to come back and haunt him. The opening bowlers Fez and Brownie both bowled well on a batting wicket which was flatter than Kiera Knightly. Fez picked up 2 wickets in his spell, both comfortable catches to Ash and Martin, the Raby batsmen then started to get on top of the bowling and runs started to flow very quickly with partnerships of 52, 47 and 63 the score soon reached the 200 mark, in between Reidy took a great catch to give veteran Norman his first wicket of the season, Martin also picked up a wicket and in a frantic last 2 overs there was a suicidal run out, Raby finishing on 201-5 in there innings.

As usual the tea served by the ladies of Raby Castle was first class and with everyone fed and watered Haughton started their innings with disastrous consequences, Brownie was out cheaply offering an easy catch to mid off, Ash was brilliantly caught, Martin was out swinging far too early and Paul was bowled leaving the team on 19 – 4. Reidy, promoted up the order and Dave then settled the ship, batting sensibly up to the drinks break and after a 53 run partnership Steven was out bowled for 14, Fez then cam in and after cracking his first ball for four was out cheaply, Johnny gave a dolly caught and bowled and it was left to Storming Norman and Dave to get the score up to 100, Dave was clearly getting tired after his early start which saw 6 fours and a six was finally out caught for his best ever score for Haughton, 47 with the score on 101, Norman hit 3 thumping boundaries and ran 6 quick singles and Sam Newton showed that he was not a number 11 batsmen hitting 2 boundaries before he went wandering out of his crease when he had scored 11, Shanny was out in the same way leaving Norman on 18 not out and unable to secure a 2nd batting point. A heavy defeat after clearly an error in deciding what to do but it is his first season as Captain!!!!!

WEEK 3

Another great Saturday, with both teams again getting maximum points - 1sts winning by 36 runs and the 2nds gaining yet another remarkable victory by 3 wickets - reports to follow

2nd XI & Fenwick Cup reports

Haughton Seconds against Aldbrough St John Seconds.

Stand in Captain Ash won the toss and had no hesitation in putting Aldbrough into bat, for the first time this season Fez and Brownie opened with a new ball and Fez in particular looked dangerous, he got the break through wit a fine ball that kept a bit low and Brownie quickly followed that up with a leg side edge to Paul who was playing his first game of the season behind the stumps. The Aldbrough batsmen then got settled in and runs were coming at a rapid rate, at the drinks break and with John Sturgeon and Jamie Irving bowling Aldbrough had reached 87-2 off 17 overs and were well set for a big score, then the game changed, John made the breakthrough when he saw the batsmen charging him and sent a quicker delivery wide of leg stump for Paul to take a neat stumping, Jamie quickly followed this up with some fine bowling, the runs just dried up and wickets fell at regular intervals to leave the visitors ending the innings on 128-9, Jamie took 4wickets in his first bowling performance in 3 years and John bowled 12 overs taking 3-36. The fielding as a whole was very good with only one dropped catch by Fordy and Paul showed he had not lost his touch when he performed well behind the stumps. After yet another fantastic tea (thanks Mandy, Shannon and Chris for the ice lollys) Ash and Murph opened, the early order had a disaster, Murph and Fordy out for ducks, Ash for 3, Craig 6 and Dave 9, then when Paul was out for 11 and Fez 1 the team were left on 37-7 after 13 overs, enter Jamie and Brownie, what followed was a mixture of careful batting, awful catching and rare aggression as slowly they got to grips of the bowling, early on Jamie was hitting the big shots but Brownies confidence rose and before long victory was in sight, Jamie was dropped 3 times, Brownie twice and both played and missed on a number of occasions but the got the team over the line in the 30th over, in a partnership worth an unbroken 93 for the 8th wicket Jamie ended on 39 not out and Brownie 47 not out (both career best scores for the senior team) a fantastic performance played in a really good spirit and a great victory makes it 2 wins in a row.

Fenwick Trophy first round – Haughton against Aldbrough St John

With Sam and Neil getting lost getting to Aldbrough Gary did the toss, lost and they batted, a fine opening partnership of 83 looked like setting them up for a massive score but some tight bowling near the end from Lunny and eventually Martin saw us restrict them to 133-6, on the bowling front Martin took 4-54, Lunny bowled excellent for his 1-21 off 7 and Neil and Jamie were out of luck, Chris showed his athleticism with some fine fielding for a run out, Dave played a nightmare game as keeper, dropping 2 catches and missing a few stumpings.

In reply Gary and Chris looked ok but both got out to mistimed shots, Chris for 10 and Gary 7, Danny came to the crease at 4 and after a cautious start started to swing the willow hitting 2 great sixes, one of which cleared the road, he was suicidally ran out by Sam going for a quick single which was never on for a very good knock of 24. Dave hung around, got dropped off his first 2 deliveries but couldn’t get hold of the ball and was out for 6, Jamie got the same score but Sam was batting superbly hitting many boundaries all over the ground, it was down to 16 runs off the last over which looked unlikely when only 5 runs came off the 1st 4 balls, off the 5th ball same crashed the ball onto the road for a 6 leaving a 4 to tie (and win by virtue of loosing less wickets) and a six to win outright, in the dim darkness Sam didn’t quite get hold of it was caught just short of the boundary for a fine 61, Aldbrough securing a 4 run victory. The cheeseburger and chips in the Stanhope after was superb and the match was played in a great spirit.

WEEK 2

Reports to follow, but a great weekend with both teams taking maximum points. 1sts winning by 39 runs and the 2nds winning by 1 wicket

1st XI match report

Haughton Firsts against Rockliffe Park Seconds

Sam and his team welcomed back Colin for their first home game of the season, batting first the innings got off to a disastrous start with Gary out 1st ball, Jeff and Craig quickly followed but a fine stand by Sam and Colin saved the team from another batting disaster, both looked in good nick until Sam was out for 29, Colin carried the fight with a bit of resistance with Steve who got 8, Neil 1 and Jamie Irving in his first game for a few years out for 2, Colin ended on 63 not out which included 10 fours and a six, the innings ending on 136 – 8

Colin then showed the youngsters how to bowl on a helpful wicket, taking the first 4 wickets to fall with his fantastic tight bowling, he later claimed his fifth wicket and finished with figures of 5-22 off 11 overs, with Colin and Jamie having to leave early and Rockliffe being sporting in not allowing a stand in fielder runs started to come easier, the fielding was not as good as usual, Gary had a nightmare in the field making 3 big misfields and dropping a relatively easy catch, Craig also dropped a catch (at least he had a go not like Neil who bottled it) but Fordy showed them how to catch taking to fine catches in the field, Sam also got in the action with his quick thinking getting a run out, Jeff took a wicket and it was left to Steve Allenby to mop up the tail taking 3-17 as Rockliffe were dismissed 38 runs short for 98, a margin that would have been far greater with 11 fielders on the pitch but either way a good recovery and the first of hopefully many victories for the 1st team.

2nd XI match report:-

Haughton Seconds against Barningham Seconds.

Martin won the toss and had no hesitation in putting Barningham into bat. Brownie opened the bowling and after a terrible first ball wide that bounced 3 times before it reached to keeper started to bowl on a length and with the last ball of his over clean bowled the Barningham captain. Adam (Fez) opened up the hill and immediately got the ball in the right area and with his 3rd ball got the batsmen playing away and top edged for an easy catch by Paul at backward point, he then followed up with his last ball of the over when the batsmen tried to knock the ball over the wall only for a spectacular and casual looking catch by Steven in the deep. Barningham 1-3. Both bowlers kept it tight but couldn’t get the breakthrough until a double bowling change did the trick, Shanny’s first ball a “Half Tracker” skied to Ashley at mid on, not to be outdone Martin then started to bowl a good line and after 5 balls on the batsmen’s legs he got one to straighten and cleaned up. He did the same in the next over when the Barningham danger man got one that reared up and his head then one which kept low. John Sturgeon then also took a wicket with his 1st ball “Half Tracker” and Martin cleaned up the tail with the assistance of some good fielding from Brownie who finished it off with a run out leaving Barningham 62 all out.

After tea Ashley and Daniel opened the batting, after a shaky start on a pitch still helping the bowlers Danny was very unlucky to see an inside edge just trickle onto his stumps and just dislodge the bails, Murph was run out after a bad bit of running between the wickets and Paul looked sensible with the bat until he played and missed, Adam Weatherburn did the same after hit a lovely shot for four and then Dave joined Ash in the middle. They both looked to be comfortable with Dave hitting a towering six and a neat boundary in one over brought the score to 42 – 4 before the collapse started, Ashy was bowled, martin out slogging, Shanny bowled and Sturg bowled to leave us struggling on 44-8. The next over was to change the game, the first ball a leg side wide was also miss fielded on the boundary, Dave then followed this up by cracking 3 boundaries to take the score to 61, then in the next over Brownie was given out LBW, Steven joined Dave at the crease, a swing and a miss for the first ball followed by a big thick edge and a scampered single meant the match was tied, Dave tried to score the winning run and off the last ball got a shortish one, middled it and thankfully was dropped by the fielder as they scampered for the win by 1 wicket with Dave unbeaten on 25, he has now played at Barningham 3 times and has not yet lost his wicket.

WEEK 1

Official reports to follow, but the results were not too good with the 1sts going down by 9 wickets away to East Cowton and the 2nds losing by 6 wickets at home to Barton 2nds.

NOTE - despite what was written in The Sunday Sun - B Dobinson has not made a comeback - it was P Dobinson !!!!

Here they are folks - the eagerly awaited reports from Chairman Dave:-

Haughton Firsts against East Cowton

Sam and his makeshift team made the short trip to East Cowton, the first problem was that Sam lost the toss and to no great surprise was asked to bat first. Keith and debutant Gavin opened the batting and as expected batting proved to be difficult, Keith was dismissed for 4 and Gavin 1, Sam also didn’t last long, he too was dismissed for 4. Craig and Steven Allanby then temporarily stopped the sinking ship, they both batted well and correctly until Craig was out for 6 and Steve for 16 (including 3 fours). Neil didn’t last long, dismissed for 1 then Paul, who last season hit a career best at the ground again proved that he enjoyed batting their, he batted well for his 13 (2 fours), Brownie was out for 5 and Lunny hit 2 boundaries before he was dismissed for 8, Fordy and Sam didn’t trouble the scorers and the team was dismissed for just 71 in the 23rd over.

After tea the strong batting line up of East Cowton proceeded to batter the bowling, knocking off the runs in just 8.2 overs, for the loss of 1 wicket, Paul taking an easy catch of Lunny, Paul also very nearly pulled off a spectacular catch but just couldn’t quite hold on to it (don’t worry Paul it will not go towards the Lurpak Trophy)

Haughton Seconds against Barton Seconds.

With off field activities clearly effecting the morale of some of the senior players their was a similar story to the first 11, new captain Martin despite all of his ringing around could only muster 10 players which included a few golden oldies against a Barton team which contained only 2 bowlers and a very experienced line group of players and only 1 youth player. Martin too lost the toss and on a green wicket ideal for line and length bowling was asked to bat. It was then that the invasion of the ducks descended on Great Burdon. Ash was out without scoring, Dave for 1, Peter and Adam (Fez) were also dismissed without scoring, martin was out swinging for 4 and with the score 16-5 it was up to Norman and Murphy to rescue the precarious position. The recovery was short lived after a number of edges and quick running (honest) byes got the score up a bit, Norman was finally dismissed for 2, John Sturgeon managed 4 and Steven and Murphy at least managed to extend the innings to the drinks break until Steven was dismissed for 4, Murphy scored the only boundary of the innings, a deliberate edge through the slips but he eventually was dismissed for 7 leaving Debutant Jason undefeated on 1, the innings finished with the team dismissed for 36. As is usual with the second team tea was superb, a vast selection of wraps, pastries, sandwiches and ASDA cakes were served up, thanks to the new tea ladies (Martins mum and Girlfriend, Stevens mum and my daughter).

Barton started their innings and Martin and Fez both got their line and lengths on the mark and wickets started to fall. Fez took the first, a spectacular one handed catch behind the stumps by Dave, next over Fez took an easy catch at short Fine leg so the team had picked up their first point of the season, soon after they picked up their second with Martin getting the Barton captain plumb LBW and Fez getting one to nip back and clip leg stump left Barton 25-4, unfortunately that was the last wicket, Barton eased to victory in the 13th over, both bowlers bowled well with martin picking up 2-11 and Fez 2-19, the other positive was that the fielding was good, no dropped catches and only 1 no ball in the bowlers extras column.

It is expected that more seasoned players will be available this week, the first team take on Rockliffe Park Seconds at Great Burden and the Seconds take the trip to North Yorkshire to play Barningham Seconds, any support, as always would be welcome.
