Weeks 10 to 22 - 2008 season
2008 season match reports
Week 22 - last weekend
Surprise, surprise - both matches rained off - this web reporting just gets easier and easier!!! What a crap summer!
A few sorry stats:-
HCC had 15 rained off matches = 34%
HCC had 2 conceded matches = 5%
HCC 2nds had 9 rained off matches = 40%
HCC 1sts had 6 rained off matches = 27%
At least we had a good booze up last night and the bat draw was won by No 17 - ticket holder Ian Burgess - does he know what to do with a new bat?
Thanks to Dave for organising the event last night
Week 21 [only one week to go!!!]
Can't believe it - the weather is the winner again!!! Both matches rained off - the 8th of the season for the seconds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Week 20 [yes week 20 - only two matches to go!!]
Differing fortunes this weekend, but at least we got some cricket!!!
1st XI beat Rockliffe Park 2nd XI by one wicket -I hope I get a report because I suspect some new players will deserve a mention. From the Sunday Sun, I can at least mention runs from Andrew Sturgeon and Paul Dobinson together with 3 wickets for Neil Wilkinson - a good 20 points
2nd XI lost to high flying Barton 2nd XI by 80 runs - 3 wickets each from Sam & Martin.
No reports weeks 15 to 19
WEEK 14
Mixed fortunes this weekend with the 1sts losing by 6 wickets to Dales [I Burgess in the first team!!!!] - also I'm told "catches win matches!!"
The 2nds had a great victory against Aldbrough by 5 wickets - reports to follow
Also the 2nds lost in the last over to a very strong Trimdon C&DH side in the FB Howell trophy on Friday night.
WILKO JUNIOR TAKES THE HONOURS BUT CATCHES WIN MATCHES AND DROPS DONT
On what started as a glorious sunny day Neil lost the toss and we were asked to bat first. Butch and Louis started the innings and we lost the first wicket in the 3rd over with Louis clean bowled, Ian then came in but didn’t hang around long so Butch and Colin started the repair work with a good useful stand before Colin was out unluckily stumped off the wicketkeepers pads for 21, Butch then followed next over getting sucked into the trap Dales had set for his favoured pull shot and he was caught on the boundary for 34, Dave got a duck with another back leg LBW and this brought a welcome return to Cricket for Ian Burgess and with his inclusion on the team the average age of the team quadrupled, unfortunately he could only make 2, Fez was out 1st ball and it was up to Neil and Nezzy to get the score up to above 100 which they managed, Neil was last out for 31 given out by his dad stumped leaving Haughton on 105-9.
Tea was served.
Dales came into bat and after a couple of wayward overs Neil did the trick taking 2 wickets in an over both regulation catches to Ian who had taken the gloves off an injured Dave. With Dales then on 17-2 the decisive over came from Neil with first the opener getting a top edge which went up in the air, at first Neil and Ian moved to the ball and like a couple of children playing the a game of “Musical Status’s” they both stopped moving and the ball landed in between them, if that was not a big enough let off 2 balls later the same batsman edged a regulation catch to Colin at slip which was also put down, he then took full advantage of the mistake and also offered another sharp chance at slip which went for another boundary, Ian picked up another wicket and Neil got his 3rd near the end and indeed could have had a 4th but for another drop catch, the easiest of the season by Nezzy despite Neil actually calling for it. Dales got over the finish with plenty to spare leaving Colin the chance to go to the pub and Dave the chance to catch the 2nds just winning before the flash-floods.

WEEK 13
The second XI match was called off early on Saturday due to conditions at Raby. The 1st XI managed to play against Catterick, but just failed to reach the required target - losing by 15 runs to the League Leaders.
Haughton against Catterick Village
Super tight bowling proves fruitless as the wicket is the winner.
To the relief of many Saturday cricket returned to Great Burdon on Saturday when the majority of the league games were again washed out.
Neil won the toss and unsurprisingly put the opposition into bat, straight from the off it was obvious that runs would be very difficult on a wet wicket, early energetic fielding proved to be the key as Neil and Lunny bowled very tightly giving hardly anything away and it was once again Lunny who made the breakthrough as he took the first 3 wickets to fall all caught and bowled with the 3rd wicket hitting him in the midriff and he clung on to the ball, Neil again bowled without reward bowling 5 maidens in a row in his 9 over spell and at the drinks interval Catterick had stuttered to 29-3 off 18 overs. Ian Revell replaced Neil and soon started to get into the grove and finally took his 1st wicket for Haughton with a caught and bowled, all the more remarkable because only Andrew appealed and the Catterick captain walked, he also very nearly got a wicket with the next ball but Andrew could not quite keep hold of the ball, Davie Edwards took over from the other end after Brownie had an off day with the ball and after being hit for a couple of lusty blows got one to skid through to take a wicket, Ian kept plugging away and picked up another 2 wickets and Lunny could of got another but Brownie dropped a skier made all the worse as the ball then rolled over the boundary for 4, Catterick finished on 94-7 in the 35 overs with the last 5 overs costing 34 runs. Lunny finished with 3-22 and Ian 3-23
A fantastic tea and Haughton started the chase, usual 2nd team openers Paul and Andrew opened, Paul tried a very dodgy 2nd run and was easily run out, this was followed Steve Allenby getting a hairy duck. Butch and Andrew then came to the wicket but got bogged down as the scoring became extremely difficult until Andrew was finally out for 17 then Brownie and Dave were out cheaply, Neil joined Butch and hit a couple of meaty blows including a maximum but his eyes lit up when he went after another and was caught near the boundary and Butch resistance was finally ended when he was out for 23, Ian tried to rescue the lost cause and certainly got the visitors rattled before he was out for 11 after a couple of boundaries but in the end the innings came to a close on 80 all out in the 34th over.
An enjoyable game played in the right spirit by both teams with loads of encouragement and on another day could have gone the other way.
