1947-1957
Miss N. Newman
In July Miss Griffiths resigned as HT to become Infant Method Tutor at DTC.
On 3rd November Miss N.Newman commenced duties as Headmistress.
In September a Welfare Officer was appointed for the first time.
There were many students in the school.
On 3rd November Miss Newman was appointed HT.
On 14th November the school closed for the wedding of Princess Elizabeth to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten.
Parents of those children taking part in the plays were invited to see the performances.
1948
In January Miss Griffiths was back in school with her students from DCT.
Moray House Intelligence tests were administered.
Mrs M was absent to see to her sick husband.
On 26th April school closed at Noon to celebrate the Silver Wedding of the King and Queen.
In June a Song and Piano recital was given in the Hall by visiting artistes.
At the Intertown Sports. HHIS won 6 prizes and just missed winning the Shield.
HMI in school with special attention to two of the teachers.
HT had a week off to attend Ministry course at DTC - ‘The Infant School’.
HMI in school with special attention to the upper half of the school.
On November 15th the school closed at noon to celebrate the occasion of the “Royal Birth”.
(This was Charles, the Queen’s first child).
Non Competitive Music Festival – Singing and Percussion Band.
1949
Essential Intelligence tests were given to all 7+ children.
The Moray House Picture Intelligence Test was given to Class 5.
1950
Immunisations.
Students in school to observe creative and physical activities.
Class 5 visited Whessoe and Burtree Farms in connection with the development of a Centre of Interest
Miss L absent on a one day Refresher Course.
In the summer 183 children transferred to the Junior Department including the 7+ age range.
Now only six classes. The Junior Department has use of Room 4.
Formation of Joint PTA with Junior Department.
HT left the school to attend a one-year course at the London Institute of Education.
1951
The Mobile Cinema showed Safety First films.
On 1st July the HT returned to duty.
Miss Elsie Curry appointed.
Meeting of Group 3 Managers at HHIS. (This was to become a regular event hosted in turn by each of the four local schools).
Xmas Party. Santa Claus present. Presents for all. Punch and Judy.
1952
A tutor from Moray House TC observed methods.
1953
Mrs K absent due to husband’s illness.
Mrs K absent. She fractured a finger pushing the piano into Room 4 for the percussion band.
1954
14 students from DTC to see demos of PE and Nature Study
In May there were 391 on roll
In July 82 children transferred to the new school at Springfield, 140 to the (HH) Junior Department. Staff transfers too.
From September there were six classes, taught by Ferguson, Swinbank, Smith, Staley, McCubbin and Banks.
In December, a Full HMI inspection. Very detailed report on separate sheet.
Will Fleet, the ventriloquist performed.
1955
New lighting system installed.
Caretaker Mr J Richmond retired. Mr Ellis appointed.
After the summer only 5 teachers in post.
On 15th November the school closed AM. The Duke of Edinburgh was opening the new High School for Girls.
Miss S left the staff for Walworth ESN School.
1956
In March the PTA Choral Group Concert took place.
1957
In March Miss J Coatsworth replaced Miss Newman as HT.
