Welcome to Knights Of The Black Phoenix

Knights Of The Black Phoenix are a non-profit making organisation which participates in jousting, foot-fighting and associated skills.

Accredited training and coaching are provided at all levels to set standards which are laid down by the International Jousting Association.

Knights of the Black Phoenix are growing from strength to strength with new riders and horses being schooled for the coming season. During the summer months we usually average one event per month along with social events & training sessions.

About the International Jousting Association

The International Jousting Association (IJA) was formed by Alan Beattie and a number of other English jousters in 1987 and is registered as an equestrian organisation with the British Horse Society.

In 1996 Alan visited New Zealand to attend a jousting event that was also attended by Australians Rod Walker and Justin Holland. After assessing both jousters, Alan awarded them with the IJA Level 4 (Jousting Instructor) Certificate. All three then met with me prior to them leaving New Zealand and we laid the foundations for the modern IJA.

In 1998 Rod and Callum Forbes put together a revised set of IJA jousting rules for our inaugural 1999 Australasian championships held in New Zealand. These were later revised for the 2001 Australasian Championships based on our respective experiences over the past couple of years including my experiences with James Zoppe's American Jousting Alliance in 1999.

The IJA's purpose is to foster the development of a group of like minded jousters & associated skills-people throughout the world to enable them to work together both to promote the hobby and to compete safely together in competitions & displays.

Although it provides rules these are not set in concrete and a member group is free to amend them as it see fit, provided that members of other groups are aware of any changes prior to them taking part in any event hosted by that particular group.

Membership is open to all at no charge. Please contact us for further details.
