Researching Robertsons in Durham City and Acklington
My ancestor William Law Robertson was born in Aberdeen in 1816 .William arrived in Durham City in 1846 at which time he was foreman on the Durham Chronicle.In 1856 he became joint proprietor of the Durham Chronicle with Thomas Calvert.Thomas Calvert died in 1869 so William L. Robertson took over the management of the Durham Chronicle until his death in 1882.
William was married twice , his first wife Helen Neilson/Nelson ,came from Edinburgh and died sometime between 1861 and 1871.I do not think there were any children from this marriage.
On 22nd Sept 1861 William married Margaret Christie who was also born in Scotland. William and Margaret had 6 children .
Margaret Ann Robertson was born on 29th Dec 1862.After 1881 I have no further informaion about Margaret Ann.
Mary Helen Robertson was born in 1865 in Durham city ,she married James Robert Burnett in 1883.
John Robertson ,William and Margaret's only son was born about 1867. John Robertson was the vicar at Acklington from 1903-1925 . He married Eleanor Jane Johnson in 1895. As far as I know they had 4 children Cyril John, Gertrude Mabel , William Arnold and Maurice Boynton . Gertrude ,was married to Wilfrid S. Heslop and in 1925 lived in Sunnybank Wylam.There were at least 2 children of this marriage , Annie born 1925 and Wilfid who was born in 1927.
Alice Robertson, William and Margaret's 3rd daughter was born in 1872.In 1901 she married Robert William Smith in Durham .
Their 4th daughter Edith was born in 1874 .Edith married Robert Battenbsy in 1899 .
Williamina ,their 5th daughter was born in Durham in 1877.Williammina died in March 1900.
