Heading to victory

This young lad at the age of 66 is known as the handsomest man in the village! Uses his head to good effect.
Do you know who he is? he played full back in this match.

Rules of the Game

000175

Grandfathers matches have a few special rules. A quick walk and side step are the qualities in demand, 'no running' the men all carried sticks to help them over the ground. Shorts are worn over ordinary trousers, shirts as a rule outside the shorts.

"He must be a wonderful man to go playing these rough games" says Elizabeth Ellen, wife for 64 years of Harry Eato.

John 80, sees cup come home again

000196

Exactly 60 years last month Lingdale Football Club won the Eskdale Challenge Cup. They have had to wait that length of time to achieve the same honour. The name of the cup – and the club – have changed since the days of 1909. But it was still appropriate that the last surviving player of the Lingdale Swifts as they were known, should present the cup, then called the Whitby Hospital Cup to this years victorious side.
Mr John Smith, 80 of Lingdale, who played centre-half in the 1909 team, was on hand to do the honours at the Bunch of Grapes , Scaling Dam, this week. It cost 3d to go on the field and the gate made £100.

Kindly contributed by Rosalind Hill.
