A little information about Stanghow
Taken from 'Skelton and its history'.

A Chapel was built here in 1910 and is now a community hall. The end building in Low Stanghow was used as a girl guide hall in the twenties and thirties, but it was actually built as a chapel in the 19th century and was known as the 'Gospel Hall'.
I am informed by Mr Peter Dorman that a Chapel existed before this one, it was according to the records of Stanghow Hall, situated in the Quarry at Low Stanghow, and was raised on a platform.
He also told me that before the blacksmiths shop at the junction of High Stanghow and Low Stanghow there was another one near Stanghow Hall. As you go through the gate near the hall to travel to Moorsholm there is a large spreading chestnut tree, it was beneath this tree that the village Smithy stood.
Stanghow Hall was built by Mr Isaac Scarth in 1776 and a mantle piece in the Hall bears that date. Mr Isaac Scarth was the great Grandfather of Mr Peter Dorman, and Peter has records of the time the hall was built.
Two wagon loads of timber from ships in Whitby docks were bought for construction. Liddle brothers of Moorsholm took two carts and 6 horses to haul the timber, 2 horses to a cart with two spare for relief. Several kegs of rum were bought for the cellar at Stanghow Hall at 9 shillings a keg.

A Rural Scene
 | One could be forgiven for believing that this was a truly rural scene...until you spot the familiar winding gear of the colliery. This is how Stanghow Road at Lingdale appeared, with Lingdale pit - known locally as Peases' Pit- The pit head and chimney were felled in 1940.

STANGHOW is a township, 2 1/2 miles south east of Skelton. William Henry Anthony Wharton esq. D.L., J.P. who is Lord of the manor, and Isaac Scarth esq. M.B. are principal landowners. Here is a Primitive Methodist Chapel. The area is 3.10 acres of land and 34 of water; rateable value, £13,747; the population in 1911 was 1,480. Letters through Boosbeck. Lingdale is the nearest money order & telegraph office, about a mile distant Wall letter box cleared at 4.30 & 8.5p.m. weekdays only.

Stanghow & Lingdale
Stanghow is over 600ft up across the valley of the Hagg Beck from Moorsholm. Its Scandinavian name probably signifies a boundary mark.
Near by is the ironstone mining township of Lingdale, a lively place with shops, a well established Institute built 1912 for indoor recreation and meetings and also a workingmens club.
There is a Church of England Mission church and places of worship for congregationalists, methodists and the Salvation Army.
