Removal of the Shale Heap
 | This photograph was taken by Derick Pearson, who has kindly allowed me to add it to this site. It is unique as he took it himself in 1984, and cannot be found anywhere else. he also holds the copyright for this photo.
Derick writes "It is the removal of the shale heap, to take this photo I was standing on the ground where North Terrace had recently stood. I was about half way down where the street would have been. To my immediate right there would have been Coral Street, and to my left and left front under where the diggers are, would have been the old cycling track that your ancestors raced on. In the foreground are the bungalows that Mr. Raymond Jackson built on the land that the family owned for some years. They used to have horses (some from the pit at times) in the field running from there right up to where the garage and War Memorial now stand. This field fronted the Main Road and the shops, and went all the way up the High Street to the Tavern. It was sold by Mr Jackson's father (also Raymond known as Raydee) to the council to build the Meadowdale Estate which you see now on your left as you come up the High Street" .

Lingdale
 | This photograph was taken from the bottom end of Lingdale looking up toward Moorcock Row, first left with Oldham Street behind. The Victoria Public house is visible on the middle right and of course the Shaleheap when almost at it's full height. It is hard to believe now that it loomed so great above the village.
photograph kindly contributed by Derick Pearson.

The Black Smiths Shop
 | The Black Smiths shop is now a new house at the cross roads of Little Moorsholm, Stanghow, and Seaton Road. The photo was taken 15th February 1963 during the bad winter that year, in the foreground is the Stanghow Chapel which is still there.
Photograph and information kindly contributed by Stuart McMillan.
