Moorsholm 1913

MOORSHOLM or Moorsham is a township 5 1/2 miles east form Guisborough and south-by-west from Lofthouse (or Loftus) station, on the branch of the North Eastern Railway from Saltburn and in Whitby county court district. The Chapel of ease here in connection with Boosbeck Church is a building of stone in the Norman style, erected in 1892, at a cost of £1,500 at the sole expense of the late J.T. Wharton esq. (d.1900), and consists of chancel, nave and a western tower containing 2 bells; the church clock was given Dec 3, 1902, by the late R.P. Petch esq. in honour of the coronation of His Majesty King Edward VII,; the church will seat 100 persons. The church and burial ground were also given by the late R.P.Petch esq. There are also Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, and a room for meetings and a club in connection with the church, W.H.A.Wharton esq. D.L., J.P. of Skelton Castle and the trustees of the late J.P.Petch esq. of Loftus, are the principal landowners. The acreage is (with Gerrick) 4,358; rateable value £2,963; the population in 1911 was 605.
Post office, Great Moorsholm - Newrick J. Ditchburn, sub postmaster. Letters arrive from Boosbeck at 9.45 a.m.; dispatched at 3.45 & 7.35 p.m.; no Sunday delivery. Lingdale , 3 miles distant is the nearest money order & telegraph office.
Public Elementary School (mixed) erected in 1876 for 180 children; average attendance 18, Wm. Jeckell, master.

Moorsholm
To the south of Kilton, Moorsholm village is attractively set on high ground between the dales of Hagg Beck and Liverton Beck. Under a mile to the South is the main moorland road from Whitby to Guisborough and the curiously shaped Freeborough Hill, 821 ft high and a grand view point, to the west the road runs past the large reservoir at Lockwood. Moorsholm is a farming parish, the village has a few shops, a post office and two inns. The small church is chapel of ease to Boosbeck church and there is a Methodist Church Hall.
At the time of the Doomsday survey, there were two manors here, held by the Earl of Marton.
William I granted them to the family of de Brus.
