Skelton

A new school room was built here in 1910. Before the building of a church, services were held at No. 9 Richard Street. Colonel Wharton presented a building to the village of wood and steel corrugated sheets to use as church and Sunday school, it was later moved to another site and extended. A church was opened on the 12th Dec. 1928, a mission Room had been opened in 1909.
In 1871 the Skelton and Brotton U.D.C. built 156 cottages in North Skelton. North Skelton Workingmens club was built in 1910. A petrol pump was opened on Holmbeck Road by Mr.Patton in 1925. The village has an institute which was extended in 1901. A gentleman named Harry Cooper lived in North Skelton in mid 19th century, he was 8 feet 4 inches tall, and weighed 30 stones, he toured the world with Barnum and Bostock's circus as the tallest man in the world. There is a cenotaph to those who gave their lives in the war. Apart from the workmen's club there is also a public house called 'The Bulls Head'
