OLIVER
I'm researching my husbands family, the Olivers. Originally they were from Durham and York area.
Confusingly his gt gran was an Oliver before she married an Oliver but I have managed to sort them out.
His gt grandparents were John Henry and Annie Oliver. They were living at Slapewath Cottages when they had his Gran, Hepzibah Oliver. Siblings of both John and Annie lived in Guisborough (Westgate), Charltons, Margrove Park and Skelton.
Other surnames Im interested in are Johnson and Ovington from Brotton, Loftus and Skinningrove.
Thank you.

NICHOLSON
I am looking for my fathers family. On the 1901 census they are listed as William and Sarah with Annie - 6, Hilda - 6 and Thomas 5 months (my father). Sarah was Sarah Ann Donaldson her family lived in the water tower in Saltburn. She died in 1902. William then married Mary Edith Dowson in 1904. I believe they had a child. Then my father immigrated to Canada in 1926 and a few years later lost touch with his family. They were last known to live at #13 Pease St, Lingdale. And father used to say his sisters had flaming red hair and one of them married Mr. Right (or Wright).
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knew them at the time or know of any descendant.
Thank you.

WW1 Camp
Camp at Bonas Farm
Does anyone remember if there was a camp during the 1st World War on the playing fields near Bonas Farm, Skelton.
We would be interested to hear from anyone who remembers it or has even heard about it from relatives. We have been told by a couple of people that it was there and then again by many others who said that it was not, any information would be most welcome.

CATRON, BURNHOPE, PARDON & FAULKNER
I am researching Catron, Burnhope, Pardon and Faulkner in the Brotton, Skelton, Lingdale and Redcar areas. These people were miners arriving from Durham and Northumberland around 1870, and going on to run a Post Office and grocery store in the area.
Any information about any of the above families would be most welcome.
Thank you

CALEB METCALF
I have just found out via 1901 census that my great grandfather, Caleb Medcalf, had a hairdresser/barber shop at 26 High Street, Lingdale. He was originally a miner, living at Boosbeck, so this must have been quite a leap. Do any local historians know of this hairdressers?

HORSEWOOD FAMILY
I have produced a history of the whole of the Horsewood family (and I mean the whole - from the early 1500s to include everyone with that surname and it's variants on the BDM indexes!)
Part of that family settled in Lingdale.
David Horsewood was steward of the Lingdale Primitive Methodist Church for some 40 years.
I'm hoping that somewhere someone has some photos that they might be willing to share...

GEORGE EASTON
I have received a letter from a lady looking for information about her Grandfather, If anyone has any information please get in touch. Alison
My Grandad was born in Boosbeck 10.10.1918 @ 54 Margrove Park his name was George Easton
He had a sister Ethal Easton born 23.04.1914 @ 91 Margrove Park
Their parents were called:
George Easton and Eva Emma Easton (Nee Waller)
Eva died about 6 weeks following my Grandad's birth on the 16.11.1918 and I believe she is buried in St Aidens church.
Ethal remained with her father George and I am trying to find anyone who is related to Ethal.
My Grandad didn't stay with his father but was adopted (not officially) by a family called Toes and at some point they moved from Boosbeck to Thurnscoe in Rotherham South Yorkshire. I was hoping to try to find some Toes ancestors which would know about this.
Long shot I know but I would be grateful for any information you may have.
Many thanks

Neal / Ezard
On the 1901 Census, there is reference to George Neal age 36, at 7 Stanghow and his family. This gentleman is my great uncle and I wondered if there were any members of the family interested in exchanging information.
My maiden name is Neal and my father was born at East Pastures Farm, Skelton. I first found Georges name on a Communigate site while researching my family connections at Weeting, Norfolk.
Secondly, is there anyone in Lingdale doing the villages history that is interested in the people who lived and worked there?. My family names are Ezard and Neal who were residents in Wilson St. Tyreman St, and Dixon St. Any information is most welcome

WATSON
I am researching the WATSON family, who spent over twenty years in Lingdale between about 1896 and about 1919, and would be grateful to hear from anyone remotely interested. Ironstone Miner James Watson (b1871) and his wife Jane Elizabeth (nee CLARKE or WALKER) (b1875) moved from Rosedale into 13 Moorcock Row (also known as Vaughan Terrace), Lingdale, with their first child John William (Jack) (b1895) in around 1896. They produced a further fourteen children there - Sarah Ann (b1897), Anne Elizabeth (b1899), Samuel Walker (b1901), Monica Hilda (b1903), Olive Brenda (b1904), twins Roland and James (b1905 and both died in infancy), James Douglas (b1907 and died in infancy), my dad Donald (b1910), George Walter (b1912), James (b1914 and died in infancy), Edith Ethel (b1916) and Olga (b1918 and died in infancy), plus another one child as yet untraced who died in infancy. The family progressively (older children first, then the parents and younger children) relocated to Shipley in the West Riding from about 1916 to about 1919. Local families mentioned by older relatives include the Kirk family, and the Crispin family. Any info, thoughts or comments very gratefully received......"

KIRK and Ness Hagg
I am researching my family from the United States and know my ancestor (Roger Kirk) lived at Ness Hagg Wood until 1658, when he emigrated to the North of Ireland as a part of the Plantation of Ireland. He was a cooper by trade. I have reason to believe he may have had relatives in the area, possibly also at Ness Hagg.
I see from your website that Ness Hagg was
uninhabited in 1891 and I know what what is left there is in ruins. As far as I know, there is only one structure there now - a badly eroded stone house with no roof and only part of the walls. I am writing a narrative on the family and wonder if any one has any information about Ness Hagg, or know about it from years ago, I would be most grateful and also if there are any Kirks living in the area that may be descendants.
I enjoyed immensely reading your website and viewing the old and new photos - I visited almost every page.
Thank you very much...

I've been searching for my husband's family in the Boosbeck/Lingdale area. Names of particular interest are:
Miller, Rowbottom (his g,g grandfather is the miner who wrote the diary), Dewing, Dauncey and Britton. Although I have managed to trace many people prior to the 1901 census, later information is proving more difficult. So happy to hear from anyone who would like to share information.

John Henry Shambley b. 1894
William Lightburn b. 1899 Guisborough
Ada died in her thirties with throat cancer.
Sandra would like to know about this photograph.
She knows how they ended up in Lingdale.
The building at the back of them is full of plants and the little girl is holding a record, but what are the others doing with the silver?
I know Henry was an Ironstone miner, and Susan worked at a soldiers hospital, she was a cook, she brought my grandad home (John Shambley) that's how her daughter Emma Jane met and married him. They look well off, not what I expected.
I can't understand the silver or the record. Can anyone help me?
My Mum does remember flowers in their large front window. She also tells of a lady who may have reached 100 years +, she calls her Aunt Polly, she believes she worked in London as a ladies maid and went back to Lingdale. My Mum remembers this as a young girl when she visited her grandmother in the thirties. Ada and William had a large dog and says the police used to come and take the dog out twith them, the police station was near their home in Lingdale
