Captain

'Captain' the Clydesdale horse and sheepdog 'Nell' on Hummersea Farm with Mr Tom Hart and Mr Coates to the rear, c. 1936. Four or five Clydesdales were kept at Hummersea to do the heavy work.

Loftus Bank

No not the steep Bank which you drive up , but the inside of 'The Bank' at Loftus.

Arlington Street, Loftus

The gentleman in the foreground of this postcard of Arlington Street is the relieveing officer 'Kind George' who with his bag of money, doled out parish relief. A road sweeper is busy in the street gutter, he hauls a barrow along with him. The billboard which was on the corner of Springhead Terrace has long gone. The telegraph pole jutting out onto the road was the cause of many accidents.

Arlington Street (2)

Arlington Street, Loftus. The cottages next to the chapel, and Highside.

Wayside Cottage

There is a yearning for our rural roots sparked by rememberances such as this one of Mill Bank at Loftus, where the invitation to peep inside the wayward cottage is encouraged by smoke curling from its chimney.

A former pupil player Michael Grant, now living in Cheadle, Cheshire, kindly submits this fine photograph - a Loftus photograph is a rarity when compling 'Remember When!'
They are (from left) Back Tom Cummings, Derek Arden, Ronnie Knight, Sidney Robson, Peter Campbell, Ronnie Johnson, Michael Cornforth and Brian Cole.
Front; Brian Hall, Reg Wilson, Mike Grant, Tony Trattles (Captain), Alan Chester, Harry Jopling and Mr Richardson.

Loftus Market place

Loftus Market place c.1900 with Mr Sayer's grocery shop on the ground floor of Zachary Moore's old hall. The front door and stairs which led to Mr Sayer's living accommodation were next to the bank. Next door, and still part of the old hall, was a barbers shop on the ground floor with rooms above which were used by Mr Sayer for making jam and weighing and packaging goods. Mr Sayer eventually bought the barbers to enlarge his shop. Zachary Moore's sundial is still in place on the front of the hall.

Mr Dyson Nutt

Mr Dyson Nutt the auctioneer in Loftus Market Place c.1918. There are flags and balloons hanging from the windows of the White Horse and many people in the road, but the small dog in the foreground steals the picture. Mr Nutt lived in the house with pillars next to the Catholic Presbytery.

The Market Place

The Market Place, Loftus c. 1950 with Parrots ironmongers where the Post Office is today. There is a flagpole over the bank and Zachary Moore's house with Sayer's shop below had almost disappeared. The sundial from the old house is on the new frontage.

Meadow Dairy Co.

The Meadow Dairy, Loftus, stood in the High Street next to the present Post Office. Mr Joe Anderson was the manager, c 1924. He is pictured here with two lady assistants, one of whom is Miss Elsie Burton. The window displays are astonishing, Mr Andreson often won prizes for window dressing.

Shinty Players

Watch your Shins:

Shinty players at the Loftus Senior School in 1938, complete with their shinty sticks ready for the off in a game similar to hockey, but often twice as hazardous.

Loftus Station Entrance

A view down to Loftus from Loftus Station Yard. The Station Hotel end gable is facing on the right, and the foundry and a row of allotments are on the hillside to the left.

A birds eye view
