Who's who of the Marske Bellringers
Sue and Peter Sotheran lead the bellringing team at St. Mark's church. Sue, a retired teacher, is the Tower Captain and treasurer of the Belfry Fund. Peter, a retired printer and stationer, led the team that restored the bells in the 1970's. He inaugurated the current band of ringers in 1969 and continues to teach the art of campanology to all who wish to learn at Marske.
Ian, a retired Banker, is another long-serving bellringer and is also Treasurer of the PCC. A 'handy' chap, Ian is generally responsible for the maintenance of the bells.
John, a retired art teacher, helped to install the new bells in the 1970's and to establish the new ringing team. John is also splicer-in-chief of the bellropes and assists at learning sessions for new ringers.
Richard, a retired engineer, and Tricia a physiotherapist, travel down from Guisborough each week to make up the numbers.
Michael, Ben and Nathan are pupils at a local school and enjoy ringing as part of their service to the community.
Other ringers travel to Marske from Whitby, Guisborough, Stokesley, Ormesby and Thornaby in order to join St. Mark's Church practice sessions.
