Welcome to Middleton Tyas Church of England Primary School
Welcome and thank you for your interest in our school. This website is designed to provide information for parents and friends and we hope you will explore our site.
Middleton Tyas Church of England Primary School was founded in 1862 and is part of the family of church schools within the Bradford, Ripon and Leeds Diocese.
The school serves the villages of Middleton Tyas, Moulton, Aldbrough St. John and Stanwick. Over the years our roll has risen steadily and, in response to the demand for places, a new building was opened in 2004. We are very proud of our beautiful, purpose built primary school with hall, library, five classrooms, floodlit multi use games area and changing rooms.
The school, which attracts pupils from both inside and outside the catchment area, provides a modern, well equipped learning environment within an attractive village setting. There are no more than two age groups in any class and teachers are supported by teaching assistants. The average class size is twenty-five. Children with Special Needs receive additional help and the staff work closely with parents.
Pupils work hard and in 2008 our Key Stage 2 pupils achieved 100% Levels 4s and above in all their end of Key Stage SATs. The school came first in the county league tables as the group of twenty-two pupils was the largest to achieve 100% in all subjects. For more details click on 'Success in North Yorkshire League Tables' in the menu on the left of this page. The 2009 Key stage 2 SATs were so good that we topped 'The Times' league tables too!
In 2006 the school was awarded the Active Mark and Healthy Schools Status with further Active Marks in 2007 and 2008.
The school was inspected in March 2007 and a major part of the inspection process was the school’s own self evaluation. The school’s judgements matched those of the inspector who found us to be a ‘satisfactory school with good features’ and in the report he comments on the school's many strengths as well as areas for improvement. The full report can be found by clicking on the link below.
If you would like to visit the school and meet the staff and pupils we will be pleased to make an appointment for you.

Visit our Virtual School
 | We now have a fully operational virtual school.
Your children can access the school using their log on details. They will be able to discuss issues at school, talk to their teachers on line, vote on classroom/school issues and even submit homework if the teacher has asked them to.
We will be developing our learning environment over the next term, but feel free to let your children show you around what we have done so far…

9AM At school
I have to close the school as I have no staff! Most of them have been unable to make it into school.
The roads through Richmond and in Middleton Tyas are horrendous so please take care.
Children in Juniors please log on to Fronter (if you can) and there will be some homework for you to have a go at.
Children in Infants please try and draw us some pictures of your home in the snow and write some words that you think of when you see the snow. Year 2 could perhaps write some poems.
Once again sorry for any inconvenience that this causes.
I will be updating this site by around 7am in the morning to let you know about closure.
Staff could you please work today through FRONTER, thanks Mx |
5,30pm Wednesday 6th January 2010
Well I hope that you have all had a good day in the snow. Well done those people who managed to do their homework on Fronter, it shows us that the system works. Now we can develop it further and use it for a number of communications between home and school. Please don't worry if you couldn't get on we will reissue passwords to everyone (including parents) very soon.
I can't see these systems replacing your lovely teachers in the near future though! Just imagine doing all your school work from home with no playing out with friends urgh!!!!
I have spent most of the day updating the school SEF online and I'm feeling very bleary eyed but I thought I would try and upload a new page on the snowman competition so look out for it.
FOR THURSDAY SCHOOL PLEASE WATCH THIS SPACE AFTER 7am IN THE MORINING.No more snow please........

Thank you very much for your understanding during this difficult period.

THURSDAY EVENING
It was lovely to see most of the children in school today. Let's hope that there is no more snow tonight and we can finish the week at school. I know that a number of you had a very difficult journey in today so thank you for the efforts. Thank you also for all the positive comments regarding the postings on this website.
Once again I will post a comment before 7am in the morning if the school has to close.
The grounds are still snow and ice covered so take care, I feel that the fun run may not be held tomorrow!! Apologies to those parents who were planning to join the run, maybe next week.
Children- your task is find where I have displayed the snow creature pictures! Enjoy. |
Friday 8th January
Good morning school is open today. Please take care on the roads.
As heavy snow is forecast for us today please keep an eye on the website for early closure. If you invisage difficulty in picking up your child at 3.15pm please report the front office and you may take them home early. FRIDAY 8th January 2.15pm
Well done all of you for getting the children to school today. We have had a lovely day, working hard in all areas of school.
The snow has not arrived yet but tonight's Gym club has been cancelled.
After school club (Tyas Tigers) is still on this evening.
I sincerely hope that our communication has been good over the past week and if you feel it has please could you fill in the letter that is coming home tonight and return it next week.
You have been so supportive during this quite challenging time. I feel that we have managed to get the correct balance of safety, fun and school work. Thank you so much.
Please check the website on Monday for latest.
Even the children are saying they have had enough of the snow now!
Have a lovely (safe) weekend.

Black Ice
Dear parents and guardians,
This morning was an unexpected nightmare. Hope that we manaaged to keep safe and get where you needed to be. Sorry no notice of the conditions could be given but until we were out on the roads we didn't know how bad they were. Even the bus companies were caught unawares. If there is any deterioration in the weather then please make any decision based on your local conditions as to whether it is safe to bring your child to school. Please note that if children are in school they are kept in the building all day due to the conditions. Please note that there is no Netball Club or St Michael's Club this evening (13th)
Take care
Maxine Price
PS We will keep you posted on any developments with the weather
|
Enough is enough!
It is 11pm Wednesday and the temp is -2. Snow is falling and settling on the roads! I will post a message on here before 7am in the morning, to say if school is open, once I have contacted all the appropriate people.
I hope and pray that none of you were involved in any of the numerous accidents that happened this morning due to black ice.
In the next few days please carefully access your local conditions before setting out to bring children to school. Nothing is more important than your child's safety.
Regards Maxine Price |
Thursday 14th January 2010
We are opening school for those of you who can get there safely.
Bus families, sorry but I have been tryiny the bus company since 6.15am and had no joy! I do not know if they are coming and will not be able to ring or let you know as I am setting off to school now.
If your child is in year 1 and Gardner's Griffins please bring swimming kit just in case!!
Indoor PE kit for all please.
Safe journey.

Parents of children who use the school bus.
The 'fly in the ointment' during this stressful time seems to have been how we let you know about the school bus. I realise that some of you live quite a distance from the bus stop and it can be dangerous to walk to the stop.
I ring the bus company each morning between 6.15 and 6.45am and there is no answer! I then post my message on the website and have to set off for school by 7pm at the latest. At present I have no caretaker so Jacqui opens up for breakfast club, which is great but there is no-one at school to check the heating and paths etc so I have to set off to arrive before the children.
I have looked into a texting system but to buy one it is too expensive. What do you think about having a telephone tree amongst you so that someone could take a call from the bus company and then text a group who in turn text the remainder of the parents? It would possibly mean sending 2 or 3 texts each to make sure everyone was informed.
Please let me know how you feel about this or indeed if you can think of a better system that helps us to inform you.
Thanks BMP |
Feedback
Thanks for your feedback forms which show me that communication was great during the past 2 weeks. I am always looking for ways to improve so thanks again.
To answer one or two queries
1.This website is very 'clunky' but at present it is the only one we have that people were used to using.
2.The stories can only be added to the bottom of each page, so you have to scroll down.
3.I have looked at buying a text system but is too expensive for the school.
4.We have plans in place to begin using our VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) very soon.
5.We also have plans in place for a more up to date website.
Thanks again and I'm sooooo glad the cold weather is due to go.
Your children have been fantastic the way they have adapted to the conditions.
Take care tomorrow!

Snow free at last 17.01.2010
The fair weather over the weekend has meant that most of the snow has gone. Hopefully the school grounds will be snow free and the children will be able to play out.
I have enjoyed being able to communicate with you via the website but I realise that some people cannot access the internet so back to paper copies and our new initiatives of Fronter and new website!
Please read the section below called School development where I outline our priorities for the year and discuss the new Ofsted Inspection regime.
Bye for now.

School development in 2010
Our school development plan was sent home in early September but I will briefly revisit it here to remind you of the direction the school is driving in for this academic year.
- Develop the effectiveness and use of teacher assessments to ensure
accuracy of judgements and inform teaching through the further
development of Assessment for Learning (AfL), Assessing Pupil
Progress (APP) and pupil tracking and target setting.
- Ensure that the curriculum provides effective opportunities for the
learning of all pupils through enhanced provision for music and ICT,
and the further development of the skills based creative curriculum.
- Raise standards and achievement in writing.
- Further develop subject leadership with a focus on numeracy
- Strengthen community cohesion at school, local, national and global
levels by embedding the Social Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL)
programme, making national and global links and developing the
Christian characteristics of the school.
Also we are developing the use of our VLE Fronter and improving our Home-School communications as well as a number of other strategies for improvement.
The Government has been promoting an initiative for a number of years now called Every Child Mattters and as a headteacher my role is to promote this in the following form
I need to ensure that the pupils of our school
1. Stay safe
2. Be Healthy
3. Enjoy and achieve
4. Make a positive contribution
5. Achieve Economic well-being
We do this in a number of ways and one of the most important is the Curriculum which is designed to cover all of these areas. The children and staff know this as SHEEP Safe, Healthy, Enjoy and Achieve, Economic Well-being and Positive contribution.
I know that you all want your child/children to reach their potential and by working together as a team I am convinced that we can achieve this.
It has been almost three years since the school was last inspected and since then there have been major changes to the inspection system. May I draw your attention to the Ofsted website for further details on this. At present our school is in the process of improving rapidly in all areas and I am hoping that the impact of these changes is going to be measureable for the inspectors when they call.
If you would like to find out more about any of these points please contact me or attend the Parent forum on Tuesday 9th February at 6pm.
Regards Maxine Price
