The Internet:Proceed with Caution
“They didn’t tell me I was going to die,” was the anguished call I received from a youngish man diagnosed with Mitochondrial Myopathy.
In fact, in this particular case, there is no reason to believe that he won’t have a normal life expectancy so why had he frightened himself so unnecessarily?
I knew straight away. “You’ve been on the internet, haven’t you?”
I think there should be a big sign which comes on your screen every time you are about to go ‘surfing the net’ PROCEED WITH CAUTION.
There is a whole range of mitochondrial disorders varying tremendously in severity.
It is possible to find useful information about mitochondrial disease on the internet but it is also possible to find the ‘worse case scenario’ which most probably does not apply to you and frighten yourself unnecessarily.
It is also possible to find ‘quack’ remedies.
