History
The Mechanics Institute was founded in 1848 and owing to its popularity a two storey stone building was built on the present site in 1852, using stone from local quarries, cut and hauled by volunteers. The Institute served the Community as a centre of information, learning and community activities.
When billiards became popular, the billiard room was added in 1896. In 1936 the large hall at the back was built, and the front was altered to a single storey.
The Mechanics Institute is still much used as a centre for village meetings, entertainment, recreation and adult education activities.
The Mechanics Institute is a Registered Charity funded by Membership Fees and by many fundraising events organised by local people.
The Mechanics Institute has recently undergone a major extension and refurbishment, so that it will provide up to date facilities to serve the Community and visitors well into the future. |
