Welcome to the Northern Budgerigar Society web site. We hope this site will be of interest to those who breed ,exhibit or just keep budgerigars as pets.
You are welcome to browse through these pages and you will be made most welcome at our monthly meetings and any other of our local societies within the Northern Area.
The Northern Budgerigar Society covers a huge area of Northern England. It includes County Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmorland.(These are the true Geographical Counties not the County Councils)
The society was formed in Carlisle in September 1937, and had 37 members by the end of the year.The following year membership increased to 71 and continued to increase to 106 by 1939 when the society published its first yearbook.Of these 61 lived in the Carlisle area, most of the remainder lived in the County of Cumberland. The earliest known officials, from the 1939 handbook were T.S.Bowman,[chairman]T.Sanderson[secretary]
J.Bulman,T.H.Thompson,A.L.Wilson and J.S.Laidman. It is thought that these members were the founder members of the NBS.
In 1953 the Carlisle area failed to find members required to run the society and the Northumberland and Durham BS [which had been founded in 1946] was requested, and agreed to take over the running and the name of the society.
We hold our meetings at Bowburn Community Centre,Durham Road,Bowburn,Co.Durham DH6 5AT telephone number 01913770571, the first Sunday in every month, commencing at 2-30p.m.
Simple to find, take juntion 61 off M1 and head for Bowburn.
