Greener Funerals?

There is an increasing interest in greener funerals - both in making them more environmentally friendly and in handling death in a deeper and more helpful manner.

Members of the North East Churches EarthCare Group have been working with others in the area to develop awareness of alternatives to traditional approaches to funerals.
Such initiatives include:
* woodland burials
* the use of shrouds, cardboard or willow coffins
* more personal and sensitive development of ritual, prayer and liturgy at and around the time of death

In th near future a leaflet on 'Greener funerals', exploring options and sharing information, will be published through Local agneda 21 in County Durham. In June 2001, NECEG hopes to help host a day conference to take this forward.
