Dennis ......
 | Our trainer, Dennis Rowland, was awarded an M.B.E on the New Years Honours list, 2000 for his services to the youth of two villages - New Brancepeth and Ushaw Moor. A letter was forwarded by a member of the public and the Army Cadet Force.
Dennis joined Ushaw Moor Army Cadet force as an army cadet in 1957 and rose to the rank of Cadet Sergeant. He then joined the Durham County Army Cadet Force as an instructor at Ushaw Moor in 1965. He was promoted to Sergeant Major in 1968 and rose up the area Regimental Sergeant Major in 1976.
With help, he trained the drums and bugles of Durham A.C.F which attended the Royal Tournament at Earls Court, London, 1973 with Dennis taking part in the bugle section.
In 1978 he was awarded the A.C.F. service medal, his first clasp (which attatches to the medal) in 1987 and his second clasp in 1996. He was awarded a certificate of good service in 1976 and still serves in the A.C.F. at Ushaw Moor as Detachment Commander where he teaches military skills to girls and boys aged twelve to eighteen years. Dennis started training the Jazz Band in 1970 (Story in "All about us").
At present Dennis works for his own business along with his brothers as a solid fuel merchant with a skip hire.
On the 6th June 2000, Dennis, his wife Pauline, daughter Sharon and Son Kevin, travelled to Buckingham Palace to be awarded his M.B.E (Member of the British Empire) from H.R.H. Queen Elizabeth, herself. On the same day, Norman Wisdom recieved his Knighthood. |
