Membership to Newcastle City Riders is free of charge and open to cyclists of all abilities.
Most Sunday mornings a group we hope to set off from the rear of the Civic Centre at 10am. We like to cycle for an hour or so before calling at a tea-shop or pub. We tend to head into the prevailing wind so that the return journey is easier!
You can see some of the routes mapped in detail at
Here are some of our favourite destinations:
We like the Swinburne Arms in Stamfordham. You can get a nice toasted sandwich with a pot of tea or pint of real ale. There is plenty of space to store the bikes securely and a sunny garden to sit out. The legendary Jack Charlton is one of the regulars in the bar.
The ride to the cafe at Whitburn is an interesting combination of urban and rural off road tracks and old railway lines
We head for the coast along the north bank of the Tyne, and, after stopping for coffee in North Shields, have lunch at the Egon Ronay cafe in Seaton Sluice
Both banks of the Tyne have good traffic-free routes out to Wylam and beyond. The Boathouse Inn is next to the station and serves a wide range of real ales and tasty pub grub.
