The Oncology Unit at North Tyneside General Hospital
The charity Newcastle City Riders supprted on the 2007 ride was The Oncology Unit at North Tyneside General Hospital, Rake Lane, North Shields.
The team within the day unit aims to offer the highest standards of day patient care and support to patients and their families.
They have 10 treatment chairs and two procedure rooms.
The day unit offers a wide range of treatments including chemotherapy, blood products, bisphosphonates (to strengthen bones or reduce blood calcium levels), symptom and side-effect management and also undertake procedures such as bone marrow biopsies, pleural aspiration,(removal of fluid from chest) abdominal paracentesis,(removal of fluid fron abdomen) placement of PICC lines (for long term intravenous access) and removal of tunnelled central lines.
The service is delivered by a range of personnel including Support Worker Clerical worker

Oncology Nurse Specialist/ ODU Manager
Cancer Services Pharmacist
Consultant Haematologist
They also have 3 visiting Consultants from the Northern Centre for Cancer Treatment.
As part of the holistic patient assessment referral to other extended team members including TOP2TOE Social Worker Occupational Therapist Dietetics Physiotherapist Clinical Psychologist Macmillan and District Nursing Teams (depending upon GP Practice).
TOP2TOE is the Oncology Day Unit complementary therapy service, offering a wide range of treatments and hair-loss advice free to cancer patients. This service is funded by charitable donations. The service is staffed by trained volunteers and is currently available Monday - Thursday.
