29.11.04 - Charity monies distributed

Northallerton Mowbray Rotary Club staged its annual charity cheque presentations at Solberge Hall when proceeds from another highly-successful Golf Day at Bedale Golf Club were distributed.

The well-attended dinner was followed by an introduction from the President, Kevin Hardisty, who helped to organise the popular fund-raising event and thanked Bedale Golf Club for their kind assistance.

The main beneficiary was Breathing Space, a charity that assists those with physical and learning difficulties. They were represented by Ray Moores and Des Hill who were presented with a cheque for £1,250, half the proceeds from the Golf Day in June.

Five further charities were each presented with cheques for £250. Ken Billings represented the British Heart Foundation, which has raised funds for life-saving defribulators in several towns across North Yorkshire. Another beneficiary was the Candlelighters Trust, which helps children fighting cancer and supports their parents to spend time with them in hospital. They were represented by Martin Ramsay.

Ralph Fieldhouse, President Elect of Pickering Rotary Cub, represented Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. He also brought along William, a fully-trained hearing dog. Sue Thompson received her cheque on behalf of Nightstop, a charity that helps homeless young people in Hambleton and Richmondshire.

The final presentation was to Hope and Homes for Children, which operates in 14 countries in Eastern Europe and Africa assisting children who are victims of war and disaster. They were represented by Derek Plows.

14.12.04 - Santa Sleigh

For a number of years members of the Club have accompanied Santa for a few nights in the run-up to Christmas as he checks out the Northallerton area. A house to house collection has raised valuable monies for local rotary charities.

This years event took place on 14th, 15th and 16th December 2004 and Santa's helpers collected over £650 for charity.

Seen in the picture above are members of the Club with Santa on his Sleigh about to set off on a tour of the Brompton area on 14th December.

2.1.05 Collection provides Shelter Boxes for Tsunami victims

On 2nd January 2005 a joint collection by the Rotary Clubs of Northallerton and of Northallerton Mowbray raised monies which have already been used to provide Shelter boxes to Tsunami victims.

The following joint open letter is from the Presidents of both Clubs:-

'We write on behalf of the two Rotary Clubs in Northallerton and District to thank the public of the Northallerton area who so generously supported the collection held in Tesco Supermarket, Northallerton on Sunday 2nd January 2005. We would also like to thank the management and staff of Tesco for allowing the collection and support on the day.

The collection realised in excess of £3300-00 for the appeal and the two Rotary Clubs have agreed to use existing funds to make a donation of £4500-00. This will enable us to purchase 9 Shelter Boxes for immediate delivery to the stricken areas. Each shelter box contains a tent and sleeping bags for 10 people together with crockery, cutlery and water purification equipment. The generosity of the people of the Northallerton area has therefore enabled our Clubs to help 90 people and to join a Worldwide Rotary Appeal to support the thousands of people in the stricken areas.

Yours
Gordon Bulmer, President Rotary Club of Northallerton.
Kevin G. Hardisty, President Rotary Club of Northallerton Mowbray.

23.02.05 Rotary Centenary Trees

To celebrate the Centenary of Rotary two beech trees have been planted on the Green to the north of Northallerton Parish Church, one signifying Northallerton Rotary Club, the other Northallerton Mowbray Rotary Club. A plaque and the trees were dedicated on 23rd February 2005. Pictured are Kevin Hardisty and Carole Ford, President and President Elect of Northallerton Mowbray R.C., Gordon Bulmer, President of Northallerton R.C., Tony Hall, Mayor of Northallerton, and Howard Smith, Vicar of Northallerton

15.04.05 Charity Race Night

About 50 people attended a Charity Race Night held at The Lodge, Leeming Bar. After supper videos of horse races were run allowing members and guests to try and choose the winners. The real winner was the fund to raise money to send 2 local teenagers on the Rotary Youth Leadership Course to be run later in the year. Sufficient monies were raised and a thank you to all who attended.

19.05.05 N'ton Mowbray host District Games Night

On Wednesday 19th May the Club hosted the District Games Night at Northallerton Cricket Club. Eight teams participated in a series of fun games including darts, boules, croquet and putting. The winners were Wensleydale Rotary Club. Besides a small cup, Wensleydale also won the honour of organising the 2006 event, which was how Northallerton Mowbray came to be this year's organisors (by winning in 2004!).

19.06.05 Rotary at North Yorkshire Show

On Sunday 19th June 2005 members staffed a stand at the North Yorkshire County Show where, in addition to advertising Rotary, they had a 'Wheel of Fortune' which raised well over £100 for Rotary charities. Also on show was a shelter box similar to the ones purchased by the Club and sent to Sri Lanka following the Boxing Day Tsunami. Pictured above are some members at the stand.

23.06.05 - Defibrillator for Bedale Leisure Centre

A £2,000 defibrillator has been delivered to Bedale Leisure Centre after Northallerton Mowbray Rotary Club joined forces with the British Heart Foundation and Bedale Welfare Charity. The Rotary monies formed part of the proceeds from the 2004 Charity Golf Day at Bedale. Pictured above are the Reverend David Paton-Williams, rector of Bedale, Kevin Hardisty, Rotary Club President, Fiona Hughes, Centre Manager, and Ken Billings, Chairman of the Northallerton and Thirsk British Heart Foundation.

08.06.05 - Rotary Kids Out 2005

On Wednesday 8 June 2005, 6 members of the Rotary Club of Northallerton Mowbray joined rotarians from across Yorkshire and South Durham for the annual Rotary and Inner Wheel Kids Out Day at Flamingoland Theme Park and Zoo near Malton.
Hundreds of children, many with learning difficulties, enjoyed a day of fun and adventure. The Club supported children from the local Young Carers group. On arrival the children and rotarians enjoyed packets of crisps and wonderful refreshment such as Dandelion and Burdock (a blast from the past), and then it was time for the rides.
Many of the children were independent but Rotarian Joanne Barker supported a young girl on many rides. Joanne was last seen looking very green after the umpteenth ride on the Waltzer.
After lunch and free ice cream it was time for more rides and Club President Elect Carole Ford persuaded President Kevin Hardisty to enjoy the water slide with her. They both took an early bath and were well and truly soaked.
At 6pm 25 excited but tired children headed home to Northallerton after an excellent day at Kids Out.
Pictured here are Carole Ford, Kevin Hardisty and A.N.Other - no need to specify positions!

01.07.05 - Charity Music Night

It was a fine, pleasant evening when the Club held it's first Charity Music Night at Thornton-le-Moor. Six acts performed for an appreciative audience and gave their time free as all proceeds from the event were going to charity. Most attending brought a pic-nic (and the odd bottle of wine).

Entry was free but a bucket collection was passed around during the evening. With the collection and the raffle proceeds over £1000 was raised on the night.

A big 'thank-you' must go to Rtn Simon Kirkup for organising the event and making his back garden available as the venue.
