Northern Pulse makeover

Major changes are going to take place to “Northern Pulse” in the very near future. One item that we do need help with is in bringing the information on the “Clubs” page up to date. In many cases this is two years old and clearly out of date. Please will you look at the information that is given for your club and let northernpulse@supanet know of any additions/omissions/alterations you would like to make, preferably after consulting your club secretary. Thankyou.

The Future of the BTA – A Message from Amanda Cantle

Dear All,

Some of you good people may already know, but on Sunday at the AGM a new company was voted on successfully taking over the British Triathlon Association and being re-branded British Triathlon Federation. All existing board members will remain in post as caretaker positions and a new board will be formed in the near future. Information describing the changes was posted out in tri news and also available on the BTA website.

The biggest change will be we will be part of a newly-formed Triathlon England to come in line with the already Tri Scotland and Wales. There is a huge amount of work to establish what that will look like.

I am attending a meeting on Sunday 19th November as your represented chair-person from the Northern Region. If you have any questions or wish me to raise anything on your behalf please forward to me by THURSDAY 16TH NOVEMBER. Sorry for the short deadline but this is what I am working to. Thanks for your time on this matter. I will keep you all posted on the progress.

Cheers
Amanda Cantle

Chairperson
Northern Region BTA

The Prudhoe Waterworld Aquathlon

Last Sunday week (29th Oct) saw the return of the Prudhoe Waterworld Aquathlon. Once a regular feature on the race calendar it has been sadly missed over recent years. Amanda Cantle and Noel Hitchcock took the overall honours but a remarkable and very welcome feature of this race was that 50% of the competitors were female!

BTA Annual General Meeting – 5th November 2006 – A Message from Jem Lawson

Dear NE Regional BTA member

WHY IT WOULD BE GOOD IF YOU COULD ATTEND THE BTA AGM and exercise your vote!
You may not be aware but the sport of triathlon, in addition to its rapid increase in popularity in recent months, has also been undergoing the process of modernisation at national level with the aim of devolving responsibility and decision making powers to national and regional level.

In line with Government policy and as is happening with sport throughout the nation, devolution of power to a country level is the thrust of modernisation. It is proposed that everything to do with triathlon in England, Scotland and Wales, will be run by the new Triathlon England, and the already existing, triathlonscotland and Welsh Triathlon. Each of these national federations will provide representatives to a new overall body called British Triathlon Federation.

This is not simply the BTA being replaced by BTF, though of course the new British body would retain control of things British, such as the High Performance programme and the British age-group teams.

Currently all decisions and policy, as well as all funding, are controlled by the BTA. This leads often to calls from the triathlon community of “what does the BTA does for us?” leading to poor membership take up, and even if triathletes are members of the BTA and TRI Clubs, then “what does the region do for us?”

By voting for the AGM proposal to establish Triathlon England (TE), you will be supporting a change in the way triathlon is run in England. In essence TE will be made up of one representative from each of the nine English regions; these people will have the responsibility amongst other things to set membership rates, distribute national funding down through the region, through clubs and for the benefit of the members administer member services and how they are distributed.

There is a real drive within TE to increase the membership. The regions will have the power to organise the membership structure in a way that benefits the clubs and the membership and not just as an exercise in “generating funds for the BTA”

Modernisation and the formation of Triathlon England will be good for the North Eastern Region, its clubs and all of its members. We need the North Eastern Region BTA membership to turn out and vote for this proposal to ensure modernisation happens, and happens now! This will ensure that Government funding continues and that we have a say in how it will affect our region.

Please make every effort to attend the AGM on Sunday 5th November in Loughborough. Proceedings start at 11:00am at the Sir John Beckwith Building on the University campus

NB ONLY CURRENT BTA MEMBERS ARE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE

If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards
Jem Lawson
NE Representative and Chair of Triathlon England Committee

Club Development Programme

Over the last two years British Triathlon North East has been working in partnership with County Sports Partnerships, Local Authorities and Sports Development agencies to run workshops for Triathlon clubs in the region. These workshops enable your clubs to become accredited to either Sport England Club Mark or Star Mark (or both).

It is vital that clubs in the North East continue to work towards these accreditations - which are basically minimum standards for any club. If you have achieved your club accreditation then it you should be continuing to work through your club development plans which formed part of your accreditation file. These standards are about to be monitored closely by outside bodies.

There is some funding available for clubs through various schemes to help them achieve or maintain their standards. The region has a small budget to help with club development but access to this will only be available to clubs who are working towards club accreditation or have achieved it. There are several benefits to club accreditation: higher profile; national awareness; access to regional funds; etc with more coming soon.

If anyone needs any help on their accreditation then please feel free to contact your Regional Development Officer, Paul Jones.

The workshops and courses in the area are available now to help you achieve Club Accreditation. The North East is leading the way on this and it is still aiming for all Clubs to become accredited.

For more information on Club Accreditation goto: www.britishtriathlon.org/clubs/index.php

Upcoming Events

If you are thinking that the season is over and you can look forward to a bit of a rest before embarking on winter training don’t forget that there are still two counting events for the regional grand prix!

The Hamsterley Hammer Duathlon on 22nd October already has a good field but with a limit of 150 entrants there are still plenty of places available. For those of you who did the Hamsterley Spring Duathlon the transition venue has changed as a result of competitor feedback and to accommodate more competitors. The run routes aren’t so severe and are much more spectator friendly with the opportunity to see the duathletes twice on the first run and on the bike. There are several trade stands (Activcycles / Woodnwheels / Sweat Shop York) and the entry fee also includes a post-race massage and a hot meal! Postal entries will be accepted until Monday 9th October and entries will be taken on the day for an extra £5 but with no guarantee of a t-shirt or meal. See page on left.

The Prudhoe Waterworld Aquathlon on 29th October still has places available. It is a few years since this event took place and it is good to see it back. A good support this time will convince the organisers to hold it again next year. You can download the entry form from the Race Calendar page.

The regional grand prix this year will accept your best duathlon / aquathlon result so there is still time to make a difference.

3rd October 2006

European Duathlon Championships – Rimini – 7th October

Good luck to our two representatives from this region – Ian Arnott and David Masterman.

22nd September 2006

Amendment - Regional Triathlon Academy – 30th September

Please note that the swim session is NOT at Blaydon Pool, it is at Gateshead Leisure Centre at 3.30pm following the run session at Blaydon Running Track.

21st September 2006

BTA National Grand Prix

Congratulations to Donna James of Durham Tri and Michael Dunne of Cleveland Biketraks who have both won their age-groups in the BTA National Triathlon Grand Prix and also to Jen Milsom and Rob Wilkins of Cleveland and John Kettle of Stokesley Duathlon who all finished second in their age-groups in the BTA National Duathlon Grand Prix.

19th September 2006

North East Regional Triathlon Academy

The next session for the Regional Academy will be held at Blaydon, Gateshead on Saturday 30th September. The first part of the session will be held at the running track at Blaydon starting at 2pm until 3:20pm. There will then be a swim session at Blaydon pool from 3:30 to 4:30pm.

During the session we will be running time trials over 1500m on the track and 200m in the pool. Additional time at the session will be used for some skills based running and swimming drills.

This years Academy is open to any child aged 11 - 16 who wishes to come along and hone their skills in our exciting sport. Please contact Paul Jones at pauljones@britishtriathlon.org

18th September 2006

Helvellyn Triathlon

Sincere apologies to Gareth Huxley of Ryton Tri who was the first north east finisher at Helvellyn in 3.53.01 and not Gary Grounds as previously stated.

The Hamsterley Hammer Duathlon

The Hamsterley Hammer Duathlon on 22nd October is an exciting new event for this region and is slightly over the standard duathlon distance at 9.6kms run – 45kms bike – 5.4kms run. For those who competed in the Hamsterley Forest Spring Duathlon the transition / start / finish area is in a different location closer to the visitor centre for safety reasons and also to take into account competitor feedback. The date of the race has been specifically chosen to catch the forest at the height of its autumn colours and features a scenic but fast run course and a challenging bike route.

As well as the race t-shirt your entry fee includes a post-race massage and hot meal in Hamsterley Social Club. Entries are still being taken and if you wish to view full event details follow the link on the left to the event page.

17th September 2006

Helvellyn Triathlon

The Helvellyn Triathlon, surely one of the most brutal and yet beautiful events in the North of England was won last Sunday (10th Sept) by Mark Laithwaite and Louise Hanley in 3.36.22 and 4.21.31 respectively. First from the North East were Gary Grounds of hartlepooltriathletes.com in 3.55.45 and Caroline Findlay of Alnwick Tri Club in 4.26.30. Full results, a race report and photographs are on the event website at:- http://www.trihard.co.uk/

Volunteers of the Year 2006 - A Reminder

Once again it is that time of the year when British Triathlon members can vote for their volunteers of the year. This year there are four categories for volunteering. Individuals can only be nominated in one of the four categories.

North East Volunteer of the Year 2006
North East Coach of the Year 2006
North East Referee of the Year 2006

And this year British Triathlon has created a 4th category which is North East Young Volunteer of the Year. (A 'young person' is someone who is 14-25 years old.)

This is how it works. Anyone (they do not have to be a British Triathlon member) can be nominated for their efforts and anyone can nominate them. The deadline for nominations was 9am on Monday 11th September but please do still send your nominations in to Paul Jones.

The Regional Committee will then put forward a maximum of 5 nominees for each category (Regional Volunteer, Referee, Coach and Young Volunteer of the Year).

On Monday 25th September online voting goes live on the British Triathlon website – ONLY British Triathlon members will be able to vote.

On Monday 16th October online voting closes. And winners will be announced in due course.

Nominations can be sent to Paul Jones by e-mail at: pauljones@britishtriathlon.org

Great News from Lausanne

It seems like the place to be right now if you’re British is Lausanne. Tom Don (men’s elite); Will Clarke (men’s U23 elite); Alistair Brownlee (Junior Men) have ALL won Gold for Britain and a clean sweep of the men’s gold medals. Will is well known in this region, having won the Hartlepool Marina Triathlon last year and Alistair, from Leeds has competed at Peterlee 2 years ago.

All of the representatives from the North East at the World Triathlon Championships have performed exceptionally well. In particular Donna James (silver); Mike Hall (bronze) and Kim Hall (bronze) all from Durham Tri Club deserve special mention for their heroics and Vanessa Raw (U23 elite) in her first season in triathlon has done incredibly well with a fourth position. Well done all! We’ll show the full results for the N-E contingent as soon as they are known.

ITU World Age-Group Championships, Lausanne, Switzerland – 2/3 September 2006

It had been my intention to name all the triathletes from the north-east who will be representing Great Britain in Switzerland next week and to wish them the best of luck from all of us. However, a prolonged search of the BTA website has revealed nothing – no team list at all (well, the elites are listed but not the age-groupers who subsidise the whole thing). Very disappointing. Not even a competitor list on the event website.

However, you know who you are and we know who most of you are. Best wishes from us all – have a good one!

Regional Grand Prix Points System

Over the last few years the success of triathlon in the north east has been a major cause of celebration for all concerned – competitors, race organisers and volunteers alike. We now have nearly double the amount of races that we had only a short time ago and each race is now full long before the closing date. The total number of competitor starts must have at least doubled.

Success however brings it’s own problems and one in particular affects the calculation of points in the Regional Grand Prix. Your Regional Committee have agreed to adopt a new system of awarding points.

100 points will be awarded to the winners, male and female, of each race. 99 points will go to 2nd, 98 to third etc. 1 point will be awarded to 100th position and everyone lower than 100th. This new system will be easier to administer and easier to understand and will come into effect immediately, i.e. this season’s Grand Prix will be based on this system.

It shouldn’t really affect the destination of the trophies at the end of the season. Scores will generally be lower than under the old system but the positions should be mostly unaffected. Some of the minor age-group placings may be affected and therefore some of the minor team placings.

Wensleydale Triathlon / Cleveland Biketraks – a message from Sandra Main

Just to let you know Cleveland Biketraks had two teams in the Wenslydale Triathlon yesterday. It is the Yorkshire Dales course but has been changed slightly and made even tougher.

1800m swim in Semer Water , 42 mile bike and 12 mile run up Great Shunner Fell. It was made even harder by the terrible weather yesterday. It was organised by Kudo Bikes and the full results will be on their web site and John Scofield's (http://www.ukresults.net/) later today.

One of our teams ( Martin Ord, Andy Smith and Brian Roberts ) finished first team. Our other team ( Kath Blakey, Mike Dunn and Tony Main ) came
5th. After the swim and bike the teams held their positions of 7th and 9th overall. Then Brian Roberts took over for the fell run and past all but one competitor to finish in an amazing second position overall ! The man that won did the whole event himself. All six of them were amazing taking part in the country’s toughest and most challenging event in existence.

The list of coaches on the Regional Officers page is clearly out of date and needs revising. Please contact northernpulse@supanet.com if your details need amending or if you have recently qualified and would like to be included in the list. It would also be useful if the list could be extended to include all referees so would all referees in the region please do likewise. Thankyou.

Volunteers of the Year 2006.

The deadline for nominations is 9am on Monday 11th September.

Race of the Year.

Nirvana Europe

I am sure you will have noticed the new logo above. Nirvana Europe, the North Shields-based travel company are going to sponsor our Children's Triathlon Series for 2007. If you are an age-group triathlete who has been fortunate enough to represent Great Britain over the last few years you will know all about Nirvana who organise the team accommodation for the BTA. Further details of the new arrangement between the North East Region and Nirvana will be published here as soon as they are finalised.

Hebburn Triathlon

Ed Cooper is desperately seeking marshals for the Triathlon on Sunday morning. If you are available to marshal Ed would be most appreciative. The future of this event depends on a smooth running this year and enough marshals. To contact Ed Cooper by e-mail - eeddiecooper@blueyonder.co.uk

The Prudhoe Waterworld Aquathlon - 29th October.

Some of you who are, shall we say - a little longer in the tooth than others - may remember the very popular series of aquathlons put on every year by Prudhoe Waterworld. This is being revived this year and the event features a 400m swim and 3 mile run. The event entry form and further details are available on the Race Calendar page.

31st July 2006

Apologies for the deafening silence from these pages for a while. Yours truly has had an attack of something you wouldn’t wish to know about! Which leaves us with quite a few items to catch up on.

Sun City Triathlon – 23rd July

This years event, which was also the Regional Sprint Distance Championships, was won in emphatic style by Tom Doughty of Sun City Tri Club in his first comeback race this season after injury and Caroline Findlay of Alnwick Tri Club with her second victory of the year. Full results will soon be available here.

Tracey Kaye – White Rose Triathletes.

The following very sad statement appeared last Thursday on the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional BTA website -

”Tragic Road Accident

Regretfully, on Sunday 23rd July, Tracy Kaye, a talented, valued and much liked member of White Rose Triathletes, tragically, lost her life following a road traffic accident whilst out cycling. I am sure you will join me in expressing our deepest regret and offering our prayers and comfort to Tracy's husband, Will, and also to both of their families.”

Tracey and William Kaye have supported a number of races in our region during the last couple of years and are well known and well liked by many in our region. I am sure I speak for all in the region when I echo those sentiments above.

The Longest Day – 23rd July

In what was the very last running of this Ironman Distance race in the midlands, Richard Marsay of Cleveland Biketraks Tri Club finished in 32nd position with a time of 11.38.49 and Arthur Puckrin also of Cleveland finished in 113th position with a time of 14.40.20

World Age-Group Duathlon Championships, Cornerbrook, Canada.

In the World Age-Group Duathlon Championships we had two entries from this region. The distances were 10km run – 40km bike – 5km run.

18th July 2006

The Prince Bishops Triathlon

The report and results can now be seen by following the link on the left.

17th July 2006

The Prince Bishops Triathlon

The regional standard distance championships were won yesterday in emphatic style by the undoubted north-east triathletes of the season – Tony Dixon of hartlepooltriathletes.com and Donna James of Durham Tri Club. The oppressive heat was the real winner, causing many notable DNF’s. The full report and results will follow “soon” but for now the photo’s of all of the finishers are ready to view in the usual place (see above).

The Cleveland Steelman

Thankyou for your patience – the photo’s of the “Steelman” are now ready to view in the usual place. All except 10 competitors are there. If you are one of the 10 please e-mail me at northernpulse@supanet.com describing your kit (including helmet) and your bike (make and colour) and I’ll e-mail you your photo by return.

The Ripon Triathlon

A busy weekend in the steamy north-east kicked off in grand style on Saturday afternoon with nearly 300 triathletes tackling the Ripon Triathlon. Nathaniel Williams and Melanie Hayward took the victors spoils. The full results are on John Schofield’s UK Results website at http://www.ukresults.net/ A report and photo’s will appear on here "soon". This is not a scoring event in this year’s north-east regional grand prix.

14th July 2006

Sun City Triathlon - 23rd July - Help needed.

The Sun City Triathlon is this year's Regional Sprint Triathlon Championship Race. If you are racing the event and are taking a friend along why not ask him/her if they would like to be a part of the event and be a marshall. All helpers get a goody bag and a good vantage point from which to view the race. Marshalls need to report to Amanda Cantle by 7.00am (race start 7.30am) and if you can let Amanda know beforehand it would be a big help ( amanda@cantle2.wanadoo.co.uk ).

Membership of British Triathlon

There is a lot of mis-information out there in raceland about the true benefits of being a member of British Triathlon. We have opened a new page (see bottom left) extolling the benefits of becoming a member and making it clear in non-legal language just why you need to join. Please read it. We will soon have links there to the membership forms that you can download.

During the meeting all NE Clubs will be able to raise any regional issues they may have to the committee but to do this a club will have to send a representative to the meeting. Only the committee members will be able to vote but if your club has an issue then please come along.

It would not have been possible to get this website off the ground without the help of a lot of people, too numerous to mention all of them. Special mention however must go to the following club secretaries:- Sandra Main (Cleveland), Kay Wilson (Durham), Karen Smith (East Coast), Tony Weed (Hartlepool), Ian Arnott (Newcastle Colleges), Sue Richmond (Ryton), Ian Walker (Sun City) and David Bell (Tyne Tri). To all these people, thank you for your help in the past and apologies in advance for the pestering you will get in the future!
