The Cleveland Short Course Triathlon was held on Sunday 11th June at Ellerton Lake near Scorton, North Yorkshire in temperatures of over 25 degrees. The 800m swim – 34kms bike – 7.5kms run event turned out to be a real test of survival but it was testament to the organisers, Cleveland Biketraks Tri Club that only one competitor failed to finish the course. |

142 competitors hit the lake (and the resident pike and chubb!) at 9.30am and 13 minutes and 25 seconds later Roger Godley of the host club exited the water in first place, followed in 22 seconds by his brother Paul. The first lady onto dry land was Lisa Tweddle of NE31 Tri Club in 15.17 followed by Natalie Batey of Ryton Tri Club in 15.37. These times include the first transition where competitors change into their cycling gear for the second discipline – the bike.
Left - Phil Coulson
The bike route for this race takes in Great Langton, Yafforth, Northallerton, Danby Wiske and Scorton before returning to Ellerton Lake and is a fairly fast route. The two Godleys kept up the pressure but the fastest bike split was by Phil Gray of One Life Racing Team with a time of 51.46, nearly 2 minutes faster than Paul Figg of Cleveland in 53.36. |
|
Both of these however were nearly 3 minutes in arrears after the swim. Batey led the ladies into second transition with a bike time of 1.02.42 but she was now only 3 seconds ahead of veteran Jaci Fergusson of Ryton Tri who had the only ladies time under the hour – 59.53.
Right - Jaci Fergusson
The run route is a flat, 2 lap affair on minor roads and tracks and Phil Coulson of Tri London who had been 1.34 down on the swim, and 3.40 down on the bike, came into his own with a blistering run of 27.06 to pass Roger Godley, the race leader from the start within sight of the finish. Coulson won by just 11 seconds in a time of 1.37.33. Godley hung on for second with Paul Figg securing third after the second quickest bike and third fastest run.
In the ladies race Caroline Findlay from Alnwick Tri Club put in the fastest run of 34.13 but she had too much ground to make up and couldn’t quite catch Fergusson who won in 1.52.41 and Batey who was second, 1.07 behind.
Photographs of (nearly) all competitors are in the usual place. If you know of any photos that are wrongly named and/or you can name any photos that aren't named then please e-mail northernpulse@supanet.com AND PLEASE DISPLAY YOUR NUMBER CORRECTLY NEXT TIME!
