The Bells

The bells bear the name of north country saints together with inscriptions: these are in Latin with the exception of the Tenor. Suggested translations are also shown below. The eight bells are:

1 Treble St Hilda
“Vox mea, vox vitae; voco cos ad sacra; venite.”
(My voice is the voice of life; I call you to God’s worship; come.)

2 St. Aidan
“Vigilante et orate.”
(Watch and pray.)

3 St. Wilfrid
“Surge: age.”
(Be up and doing.)

4 St. Oswald
“Sursum Corda.”
(Lift up your hearts.)

5 St. Chad
“Venite exultemus Domine.”
(O come let us sing unto the Lord.)

6 Ven. Bede
(We praise thee O God.)

7 St. Columba
“Gloria in excelsis Deo.”
(Glory to God in the highest)

8 Tenor St.Cuthbert
“These bells were provided from the bequest of Elizabeth Caroline Brown of Ormesby, 1908.”
