On the Roof
 | | During the night of Friday 29 February/1 March a 150 year-old beech tree was uprooted and fell against the North aisle roof of the church. Two of the heavier branches pierced the roof and ceiling. To give some idea of the impact – some branches are embedded in the path and have proved impossible to remove. |
|
From the North
 | | Fortunately, the bulk of the damage was restricted to the roof area and the windows escaped undamaged. The footpath was completely blocked. |
|
Looking Down
 | | Tree surgeons were on the scene by Saturday lunch time and enough of the tree and dëbris to clear the path had been removed by Monday night. Had the tree fallen at a slightly different angle a good part of the church would have been demolished. The church is secure and now accessible as usual. |
|
From the East
 | | We are pleased to report that no-one was hurt [except for minor grazes suffered by the webmaster who failed to go where he was looking whilst taking these photographs]. |
|
Grave Damage
 | | The tree was not diseased and it is conjectured that the recent earthquake may have loosened the roots. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that a survey of other trees in the churchyard will be carried out shortly. |
|
Repairs to the Roof.
We have received two estimates for the repairs to the roof and for the stonework to the roof. Both roof and stonework were damaged by the fallen tree. The details of the repairs and the estimates have received the approval of our insurers. We have submitted an urgent repairs application to the Diocese and we hope to begin work in the next month. Special thanks to everyone who rallied round to help with the cleaning and clearing up. |
