At the time that the Viking Raiders brought terror to the North of England, the villagers of Ormesby came to St Cuthbert's to pray. At the time of the English Civil War, when the soldiers of the Royalist and the Parliamentarian armies sought allegiance and settled scores, the villagers of Ormesby came to St Cuthbert's to pray. At the time of the Battle of Britain and the imminent invasion of Britain, the villagers of Ormesby came to St Cuthbert's to pray.
Down long centuries St Cuthbert's has been loved and valued; a place of prayer and of peace; sanctuary in troubled times.
Be it regular worship; a Christmas, Easter or Harvest Time Service; a Christening; a Wedding; a Funeral or, quite simply a place of calm and quiet, St Cuthbert's remains; a church that is here for everyone in whatever capacity. It is a beautiful, traditional building, largely unchanged since the last major renovation in 1875. The churchyard, believed to be a pre-Christian site, is the resting place of generations of villagers; the Pennyman from the Hall and the ploughman from his cottage.
We would like to ensure that St Cuthbert's Church, and its churchyard, remains; the heritage of future generations. For this reason we would like to invite you to become a Friend of St Cuthbert's and in a small way be part of the community that ensured that the gift of former generations was handed on to future generations. The Friends of St Cuthbert's provides a focus for all those who have an interest in the church and the churchyard and who are concerned to preserve and to maintain that heritage.
Membership is open to all, wherever they live and whether or not they attend St Cuthbert's. There is no fixed subscription ; we simply ask for an annual donation that is within your means. As a Friend of St Cuthbert's, you will receive an annual newsletter and an invitation to the annual Friends of St Cuthbert's Service.
If you would like to become a Friend of St Cuthbert's please complete the form found at the back of church. Alternatively, contact the vicarage and ask for a form to be mailed to your home address.
