A Meditation

God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission – I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next.

I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good, I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place while not intending it – if I do but keep His Commandments.

Therefore I will trust Him. Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him; in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him; if I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends, He may throw me among strangers, He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me – still He knows what He is about.

John Henry Newman (1801-90)

The above reading was used at the funeral of Rev, Tony Smailes

A Hymn for St Cuthbert

Tune is that for No 173 of Mission Praise – Glorious things of thee are spoken (Deutschland Deutschland)

In the rolling hills of Lothian,
Shepherd Cuthbert watched his flock;
Saw St Aidan’s spirit rising
With the Saints to heaven convoked.
Recognised the call to service,
Helped the needy, taught the poor
That the gifts of Christ our Saviour
Last while sun and moon endure.

Shared his prayers with all God’s creatures
By the sea and on the land.
Otters came to seek his blessing:
Eagles brought food to his hand.
Lindisfarne’s appointed Prior
Yearned for greater solitude:
Built himself a cell and oratory,
Praised the Lord in quietude.

Drove the demons from House Island,
Comforted the weak and lame.
Healed the sick, led by example,
Showed God’s ways to all who came.
Then was seized with mortal illness,
Raised his eyes unto the Lord.
Thus his soul sped up to heaven
To the Father he adored.

A Hymn for St George

Tune is that for No 746 of Mission Praise – What a friend we have in Jesus
Born not far from Jesus’ birthplace,
Lydda, South of Galilee
Champion of the persecuted:
Alleluia Lord to thee.
Gave away this earth’s possessions
Let his ev’ry slave go free
Sought to plead the cause of Christians:
Lord, what peace he found in thee.

By the wayside wept a princess,
Serpent sacrifice to be.
“In the name of Christ I help you.”
Alleluia Lord to thee.
So George slew the fearful dragon
Girded in full panoply
Fifteen thousand souls converted:
Lord what peace they found in thee.

Valiant knight distinguished soldier,
Scourge of wicked enemy,
Faced his trial, confessed Jesus:
Alleluia Lord to thee.
For his faith, was foully tortured,
In death found his victory.
Now with saints preserved for ever:
Lord what peace he found in thee.

Saint George Patron Saint of England,
Martyred with grim savagery,
For his steadfast faith and courage:
Alleluia Lord to thee.
Where he served in far-off Urmia,
Roses for his canopy.
Blessèd be the saints forever:
Lord what peace we find in thee.
