Why Bother

For many years the church communicated its message via a vicar in every parish. In victorian days the church was responsible for many activities in the community, for instance many professional football teams have their roots in church teams. Two of the arguably best known are Southampton, (known as 'The Saints')and Liverpool with their well known anthem 'When the Saints go marching in'.
Another activity of the Church of England that is not maybe so well known is its activity in general education.
The churches were also active in the field of early education and 'Sunday Schol was just that, because it taught children English and arithmetic etc as well as biblical stories.
Another function of the churchwardens was to hand out a subsistance dole to those who had no work and thus no income.
