Brief history of the band

NEWTON AYCLIFFE PIPES AND DRUMS

The town of Newton Aycliffe has been listening to the sound of Pipes & Drums since 1961, when the band was foundered by Pipe Major William Brown.

By the 1970’s the band were at the very top in competition level, beating everyone who came to challenge them, and in 1974 the band were awarded champion of champions at grade 4, and became world champions that same year.

Since those early days, the band has been up and down due to the decline in new members, and in 1995 the band became so weak it was decided to merge with another band to try and hold on to its heritage, but sadly this merger did not work and in 1997 the Newton Aycliffe pipes and drums was reborn, and with the recruitment of new members and the successful appointment of a new Pipe Major - Bill Farrell, the band has now risen back to the levels of competing and have regained its good name with regular customers booking the band for public and private engagements
