As children develop, the work of parenting changes. It is not unusual to feel sad and experience a sense of loss as your child moves from one stage of childhood to another.
Many parents find some of their children’s stages easier than others. Some parents have difficulty with stages that they found to be difficult when they were a child. If this is happening, try to remember that your children are not you – they are their own people, and will not necessarily react or behave in ways that you did.
As a parent your role is paramount to children in:
giving love and affection
caring and guiding
setting limits
helping them understand the world
giving them opportunities to take risks and experiment.
As your child grows some aspects of your role may change. For example, the way you give your child support and guidance will change. When they are very young you will be like a teacher and as they grow, you will be more involved in helping them to make their choices. At other times you will offer them more practical help, for example, when they have their own children you may offer to help with day care while they continue to go to work.
Therefore, at different stages in your children’s life you may notice changes to your parenting.
