Flying from Teesside

From Teesside - KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, in collaberation with Eurowings (a KLM subsidiary) fly from Teesside to Amsterdam and onwards to Cologne. Although not the cheapest of routes, this is a tried and tested route that the Twinning Association uses regularly.

Convenient flights leave Teesside at about 10.30 a.m., and arrive in Amsterdam in time for lunch. There is about 2 to 3 hours to kill in Schipol Airport before the mid-afternoon flight that arrives in Cologne between 4.30 p.m. and 5.00 p.m.

There is a convenient return flight leaving Cologne mid-morning and arriving at Teesside at about 3.00 p.m.

From Newcastle KLM/Eurowings offer flights via Amsterdam to Cologne. Fares and journey times are similar to the flights from Teesside but there is the added journey time of one hour each way, to and from Newcastle airport.

Flying from Manchester & Newcastle

Hapag Lloyd Express is an economy German airline, flying from Manchester direct to Cologne. During summer months a service also operates from Newcastle to Cologne. The air fare is up to 40% less than the Teesside - Amsterdam - Cologne fare with KLM but this is more or less cancelled out by the cost of travelling to Manchester airport by car or train. There is a reasonable saving via Newcastle

Flight times are not quite so convenient. Flights leave Manchester at about 8.00 p.m. and arrive in Cologne at about 10.30 p.m. The return flight leaves Cologne at about 7.00 a.m. and arrives in Manchester at about 8.00 a.m. (All times are 'local'.) Newcastle flight times vary from year to year. Check their timetable.

There is a direct train service from Middlesbrough to Manchester International. The return train fare is about £48 and the journey takes three hours.

By Coach and Ferry

Via Dover/Calais - This is the least expensive route. The coach journey to Dover takes about six hours, usually with a 'comfort' stop near Grantham. The second stage, from Calais to Troisdorf takes between four and five hours. Our coaches usually leave East Cleveland in the late afternoon to cross the Channel overnight and arrive in Troisdorf about lunchtime the following day.

Via Hull/Ostende - Although a little more expensive, this is the more popular route with adult groups. The longer overnight crossing allows for a good night's rest on the ship - all accommodation is in cabins with en suite facilities - leaving travellers fresh for the onward drive to Troisdorf.

Coach & Ferry packages are prepared for group travel only.

Public Transport - There are public long distance coach services from Cologne to Calais, Dover to London-Victoria and London to Middlesbrough. The overall journey takes about 22 hours and is not recommended except for the hardiest of travellers.

Eurotunnel - Eurostar from Waterloo to Brussels connects with a high speed train to Cologne. Overall journey time is around five hours from London-Waterloo to Cologne.
