Lent - a form of prayer for use during the day
O God, make speed to save us.
All O Lord, make haste to help us.
(or)
Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry;
hold not your peace at my tears. (
(Psalm 39.13)
Praise
A hymn, song, canticle or extempore praise
The Word of God
A psalm (e.g. from the psalm cycle below), and one or more Bible readings
Short readings
Sunday
Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for you have stumbled because of your iniquity. Take words with you and return to the Lord; say to him, 'Take away all guilt; accept that which is good, and we will offer the fruit of our lips.'
Hosea 14.1,2
Monday
Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain-offering and a drink-offering for the Lord, your God?
Joel 2.12 – 14
Tuesday
Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, just as you have said. Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
Amos 5.14,15
Wednesday
I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Romans 7.21 – 25
Thursday
Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rearguard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am.
Isaiah 58.6 – 9a
Friday
Jesus said to the disciples, 'Beware of practising your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.'
Matthew 6.1 – 4
Saturday
Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air; but I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.
I Corinthians 9.24 – 27
Response
Silence, study, song, or words from Scripture, such as
To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul:
All O my God, in you I trust.
Prayers

¶ Those preparing for baptism and confirmation
¶ Those serving through leadership
¶ Those looking for forgiveness

(The response R/ is Lord, have mercy.)
In penitence and faith let us make our prayer to the Father and ask for his mercy and grace.
For the people of God, that they may triumph over evil and grow in grace, let us pray to the Lord: R/ (Lord, have mercy.)
For candidates for baptism and confirmation, that they may live by every word that proceeds from your mouth, let us pray to the Lord:R/
For the leaders of the nations, that you will guide them in the ways of mercy and truth, let us pray to the Lord:R/
For the needy, that they may not be forgotten, nor the hope of the poor be taken away, let us pray to the Lord:R/
For the sick in body, mind and spirit, that they may know your power to heal, let us pray to the Lord:R/
For the poor in spirit, that they may inherit the kingdom of heaven and see you face to face, let us pray to the Lord:R/
Free prayer may be offered and silence is kept.
Let us commend the world for which Christ suffered, to the mercy and protection of God this day...
The Collect of the day or the following prayer is said.
Teach us, good Lord, to serve you as you deserve;
to give and not to count the cost;
to fight and not to heed the wounds;
to toil and not to seek for rest;
to labour and not to seek for any reward,
save that of knowing that we do your will.
After Ignatius of Loyola (1556)
The Lord's Prayer is said.
The Conclusion
May God bless us and show us compassion and mercy.
All Amen.

Easter-tide: a form of prayer for use during the day
Common Worship: Prayer During the Day for Easter-tide
O God, make speed to save us.
All O Lord, make haste to help us.
(or)
I will call upon the Most High God,
the God who fulfils his purpose for me.
(Psalm 57.3)
Praise
A hymn, song, canticle or extempore praise
The Word of God
A psalm (e.g. from the psalm cycle below), and one or more Bible readings
Short readings
Sunday
Job said 'O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book! O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock for ever! For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.'
Job 19.23 – 27a
Monday
Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgements against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it.
Zephaniah 3.14 – 18
Tuesday
As the two disciples came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, 'Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.' So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Jesus; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, 'Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?'
Luke 24.28 – 32
Wednesday
The other disciples told Thomas, 'We have seen the Lord.' But he said to them, 'Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.' A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, 'Peace be with you.' Then he said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.' Thomas answered him, 'My Lord and my God!' Jesus said to him, 'Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.'
John 20.25 – 29
Thursday
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
1 Peter 1.3 – 5
Friday
Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4.14 – 16
Saturday
I, John, looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, singing with full voice, 'Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honour and glory and blessing!' Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing, 'To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might for ever and ever!' And the four living creatures said, 'Amen!' And the elders fell down and worshipped.
Revelation 5.11 – 14
