This has been superb year for Angela Winstanley-Smith.
Beating off strong competition from Olympians Susan Rolf
(who has won it for the past two years)and Nicola Jackson,
Angie has been named Swimmer of the Year by the
Northumberland and Durham Executive and was presented with the
Arthur Mothersdale Trophy at the N & D annual Dinner & Dance.
At 15, Angela is the only British female to gain International honours
at both Swimming and Water Polo. She will be swimming for the GB junior team
at the Three Nations Tournament against Germany and Italy
in Hamburg on December 16/17, having already played for the GB women's
U17 and U20 Water Polo teams in Europe
Her polo coach George Carpenter says
"Angela is now recognised as the greatest female polo player ever produced in Britain."
Angela, head girl at Woodham Comprehensive School, this year became
English Schools Champion with victory in the 100m Backstroke in the Isle of Man.
Throughout the year she has proved her endurance and determination,
taking ten Gold medals at the N & D Championships, four at the higher ranked
North Eastern County Championships and taking the crown as
National Age Group Champion in the 100m Backstroke in August.
Two years ago Angela was one of many aspiring swimmers in her age group.
It has taken careful training by Swimming coach John Moore and Water Polo coach
George Carpenter, helped by the skill of physiologist Dr Malcolm Robson
to bring her to the front rank.
Angela's next target is the National Championships at Sheffield on December 7-10. After that ??
