Happy New Year and a Brand New Programme! – January 2011
The new programme for 2011 has arrived on our Home Page and Event Calendar with all sorts of activities planned! Along with the monthly meetings don't forget the weekly Kurling, and monthly Book Group and meals out. Not to mention the Durham County and National WI activities and trips you can get involved in ... With Surprise Speakers, a Cooking Demo, a Pink and Red Evening(?!), Crafts, Entertainment and talks to inspire and expand horizons, 2011 looks set to be a good year at Shadforth WI!
SWI Book Group Goes International! – July 2010
The Shadforth WI Book Group has gone worldwide with our new virtual bookshelf on the book listing website Shelfari, based in Seattle. All the SWI Book Group books to date have been "stacked" in order so that at a glance you can see the sheer range and number of books that the Book Group has read since October 2006! By holding your mouse over each book you can see when it was read, then by clicking on it you can read all about each book, see pictures of the different versions, and read reviews. You can view what other people are reading, to get ideas, and create your own virtual bookshelf to bring back your own book memories!

Summer Fun! – July 2009
Many members and friends enjoyed a visit to Whitby, complete with Fish and Chips, for the SWI Summer Outing this July. There was even, luckily, sunshine! There has been a Kurling session for the village and the new SWI Kurling Corner gives more details about New Age Kurling in general. A big thank you also to Age Concern whose award of a grant of £205 has enabled additions to the SWI Kurling equipment. Meetings and Kurling will take a break for August but don’t forget the Book Group and the President’s Coffee Afternoon! If you need any inspiration as to how to spend your summer see the SWI Speakers Corner section (October 2008) on travelling to help Wallabies, Whales and Orangutans in Australia and Borneo!
Carry On Kurling! – February/March 2009
2008 was a very busy year and, as Spring arrives in Shadforth, 2009 is shaping up to be no different. New for 2009 is New Age Kurling (like the well-known Olympic Winter Sport, but with less ice). A big thank you to the Cooperative Community Fund who have awarded SWI a grant of £304, enabling the purchase a kit which will hopefully also be useable by the wider Shadforth community in the future, so they can join in the fun! Muriel Wilkinson, from the Cooperative Community Fund, kindly brought the cheque to the 62nd Birthday party to present to new SWI President Mrs St Julien. With the monthly Book Group going from strength to strength, Spring walks, eating out and regular Kurling there really is never a dull moment at SWI!
A Change at the Top! – May 2008
A big thank you to WI President, Mrs Nancarrow, who stood down at the 2008 AGM. She has been an excellent President for many many years and thanks go to her for all her hard work (although it is not over as she will remain on the Committee!). Huge thanks also to our retiring Institute Secretary for her long service and her considerable work towards making our Institute a success, including her huge input into this website which enabled us to win the second prize in the CommuniGate Best Community Website Competition in 2006.
Happy New Year and a Brand New Programme! – January 2008
The new programme for 2008 is now available and as you'll see there really is something for everyone. From Slavery to Silverwork, Dancing to Inheritance Law, opportunities for Amateur Dramatics and some celebratory meals thrown in, 2008 should be a great year at Shadforth WI! Both useful and fun, we look forward to welcoming new and existing members to our exciting and varied programme for 2008!
Merry Christmas from Shadforth WI – December 2007
After all the excitement of the Chocolate Treats Meeting in November (see Special Events page for photos!), for the December Meeting the festivities continued with a Christmas meal out. Greetings to all for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Reasons to Celebrate & Chocolate - November 2007
This month marks the 2nd Anniversary of Shadforth WI website!
For the November meeting, although Mr Coombs is no longer able to give his chocolate demonstration for personal reasons, the rallying round of skilful WI members ensures that the November meeting will still provide chocolate treats, and visitors are, as ever, welcome.
Exhibition & Member’s Night – October 2007
October started with the Shadforth History Group excellent 2-day Shadforth Church Exhibition, which featured contributions from many WI members, including wedding dresses which were very effectively displayed in the centre of the church. The exhibition attracted more than 160 people, so congratulations to all concerned!
Member’s Night means that the non-committee WI members arrange the meeting. The entertainment was provided by Norman Davies, who stepped in at the last minute after a speaker cancellation. He played his keyboard and sang a wide range songs, including 60s hits, which everyone sang along to. Everyone then enjoyed the shared supper and a night of games, excellently organised by HS, including sudoku, a jigsaw picture, creating funny hats (with instructions hidden in balloons), with the overall winning team taking part in a Shadforth-style “Who wants to be a Millionaire”. Although (sadly) no millions were won, everyone had a great time.
Summer Hols – August 2007
It’s been very busy over the last few months, with the Group Meeting, visits to and from Sowerby WI, the Theatre Trip to see “Gigi” at the Gala (which was excellent), and two more winners in the Yorkshire Tea Competition. There was also the Pewter Craft Day and Tyne River Cruise which you can find out more about on the new Special Events page. The Book Group is going from strength to strength and there have even been two books selected for the summer break – that’s very keen! (See SWI Book Group for details.) Also for August is the walk to Marsden Cliffs. After the summer there’s still a lot more to look forward to – especially the forthcoming Chocolate Open Evening which is getting nearer and nearer :-) Happy hols!
A Website Re-vamp – March 2007
The National WI website has had a facelift! It aims to be "easily navigated and accessible", "to support existing members, attract new members and position the WI as a modern organization". It "includes information on our key campaigns and projects, as well as recipes, craft projects and a history archive". From 5th March their web address has changed from www.womens-institute.org.uk to the new address: www.theWI.org.uk. This website has therefore had to update a number of its links, and has a few new additions too!
Happy 60th Birthday Shadforth WI – February 2007
In addition to donating a commemorative clock to Shadforth Village Hall (complete with engraved brass plate!), to mark the 60th year of Shadforth WI we celebrated in style with a 3-course catered dinner in the Village Hall and entertainment with songs from the shows – here’s to the next 60 years!!!
Happy New Year from Shadforth WI! – January 2007
2007 is particularly special as it celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the formation of the Women’s Institute in Shadforth. We look forward to welcoming new and existing members to our exciting and varied programme for 2007.
Merry Christmas from Shadforth WI – December 2006
The December Meeting was Shadforth WI's traditional Christmas Party! Everyone had a great time with party games, quizzes, party food and carols. With greetings to all for a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year see the website Chrsitmas Card!
Community Award won by Shadforth WI President! - 9th November 2006
Congratulations to our own Shadforth WI President, Mrs Margaret Nancarrow, who was named as winner of the first Durham Community Citizen Award at a ceremony at Durham Town Hall! Mrs Nancarrow has been a WI member for more than 50 years, many as President. This award reflects her valuable work for the WI and various other community activities. She was presented with a plaque and a cheque for £300 which she donated to Shadforth Community Association.
Yorkshire Tea Competition - November 2006
The September Yorkshire Tea competition was won by another of our members, who brought the prize (a Yorkshire Tea Luxury Fruit Cake) to the November meeting where it was enjoyed by everyone.
Shadforth WI Book Group – October 2006
The first meeting of the Book Group has been arranged - see the brand new SWI Book Group page for further details. If you can't come to the meeting please feel free to take part online, via the Message Board!
President's Coffee Afternoon – August 2006
The President's Coffee Afternoon raised £100 in aid of ME Research UK. A big thank you to everyone who helped to make the event a success. (See the Links page for a link to ME Research UK website with details of their work to fight ME/CFS. This debilitating illness affects some 150,000 adults and children in the UK, often long-term and particularly women.)
Shadforth WI – Summer 2006
Yorkshire Tea Competition - May 2006
One of our members won the May Yorkshire Tea competition and was pleased to receive a Yorkshire Tea Luxury Fruit Cake!
Summer Outing to Eden Camp - 20th June 2006
Everyone set off very early on to North Yorkshire by specially hired coach and, arriving around 11.00am we had plenty of time to explore the camp and enjoy lunch at the camp canteen before returning home at 4.00pm. The camp was very interesting to visit, talking about life in Britain before and after World War 2, life in the camp itself and prisoner of war camps abroad, and more recent conflicts. The final chapel with entrance displays of the horrors of the holocaust was extremely moving.
Outing to the Northern Proms - 29th July 2006
A group of Shadforth WI members and friends attended the Fourth Northern Proms at Durham County Cricket Club (with a generous special WI offer tickets that more than paid for the membership). The night featured County Durham opera star Graeme Danby and Valerie Reid, backed by the Tavistock Chester-le-Street Riverside Band. Everyone shared a picnic and although our table did not have the candelabras held by others, everyone had an excellent time. Even the rain, which started as soon as we sat down, dried up although despite the previous hot days the night remained chilly.
The event featured old favourites such as Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia, and Jerusalem, a WI favourite! This was sung twice – obviously due to our presence! (You can play this tune on your computer if you find it in the How to Join and FAQs section!) Equally enjoyable was the junior prom from 6.00pm with Peterlee's Shotton Hall Steel Band (nice and tropical on a cold night!), The County Durham Big Band, The Riverside Junior Band and soloist Victoria Gray. Best of all was the finale fireworks display at 10.30pm. We all decided we’d like to go back next year.
New for Autumn 2006 – Book Group
Shadforth WI is thinking of starting a Book Group. More details will be available at the September meeting, or contact Shadforth WI Secretary.

It’s the AGM on Tuesday 18th April, with the election of a new committee and reports of what’s gone on during 2005/06. There will be some new faces on the committee, with two new nominees. Mrs Simpson is retiring from the committee. A big thanks to her for all the work she’s done over the years!
