Brief History of Shadforth WI
Origins - 1947
Shadforth Women’s Institute was formed in April 1947, 32 years after the first WI was formed in Britain. The first meeting was held in the Village School and attracted 35 members. For a more suitable meeting hall, the WI lent its weight to the building of the Village Hall in 1954. They organised Bring and Buy Sales, Whist Drives, Sales of Work, etc., raising over £100 for the roof. Shadforth WI have met there ever since.
15th Birthday -1962
In March 1962 Durham County Advertiser reported on Shadforth WI’s 15th birthday as follows:
"Shadforth is a very small village with only 140 houses yet out of this small community has come a most vital women's institute ... The pleasure all the ladies derive from their institution is infectious and the family atmosphere of Shadforth WI is something that larger institutes have every right to envy".
50th Birthday - 1997
In 1997 Shadforth WI celebrated it's 50th birthday. In addition to a party we planted a commemorative tree at the entrance to the Park. We are now looking forward to the 60th birthday party in 2007!
64 years and counting - 2011
Shadforth WI remains a vibrant part of the community, offering a non-sectarian and non-party political meeting place. In 2007 we celebrated 60 years of Shadforth WI! There are monthly meetings, most with a speaker on many and varied topics (see the Programme and Event Calendar). Additional activities reflect the wishes and desires of the members, such as craft days and the Walks Group. New members are always welcome and encouraged. We feel there is no better way to get to the heart of a community and make new friends than to join your local WI! |
