Slaggy Islanders Abroad

I've been meaning to alter this page for a while, so here goes - an index, country by country. Write in to add yourself or friends abroad to the page, including town and country and send a pic of yourself for the Ex-Pats Gallery.

In Canada we are represented by Eric Simmons living in the Vancouver area. Eric lived in Pearl Street and went to the Peter's. See the Guestbook.
From the same area we have Steve Gollogly living in Surrey which is half an hour from the city by car (see Napier Street on the More Slaggy page).

Colin Jones, an ex South Terrace neighbour, has also contacted me from Canada. When I get more ex-pats writing in I'll rearrange this page, maybe give each country it's own page and keep score.

In America I have one of my daughters, Julie, living in the Washington DC area with her husband and three of my grandsons. (Hi, guys!)

Now spare a thought for Terry Kelly sat on his backside in the middle of Kazachstan. He said the temperature was minus 20C but they were expecting a cold snap! You can't stop the South Bank humour!
Terry sends us an update:
TK reporting in. Decided to give Krapistan the heave ho. The Taliban were becoming a little predictable and sniping duties are not what its cracked up to be so took myself of with the bride to Cyprus for R+R in the sun.

Then in a bid to decide what to do with my future, thought that a period of meditation and contemplation in an area untouched by civilisation would be fruitfull. Therefore I have been in Wales. It has long been my belief that no more than one hundred natives of this strange mystical country could speak their native tongue. I have just met all of them. All my endevours to convert them to the joys of the Boro and hatred of Makkems and Geordies fell on deaf ears.
Not to decry the "Taffiocas" too much, without them the British Empire would have struggled to achieve the same level of greatness. Someone had to carry the spears, dig latrines and fill the night air with sweet music. Particularly if they were being flogged!

Of course, Terry isn't exactly an ex-pat as its just his job that's keeping him over there which is the same as my son, Jason Fawcett, working in Singapore. He'll be surprised to see himself on this page but he is an ex South Banker even though he was only 3 years old when we moved to Redcar. He previously worked in Taiwan for three years and Thailand for another three years.

Another ex Banker who won't expect to see himself on this page is Pete Betts who is nothing like an ex-pat but as he's working in Rotterdam I'll stretch a point and include him even though he still gets in the Cleveland at Normanby on a weekend! Update: Pete has moved on! Bored with Rotterdam Pete has now relocated in Ipanema, Brazil!! What's he looking for?Terry Kelly asks if Pete has spotted any budding Juninhos there for the Boro.

I'm definitely going to re-do this page but in the meantime I'm going to stick in an Ex Ex-Pat! Michael McElvaney lived for one year in Thailand, then two years in Turkey before living for three years in Indonesia. However he now lives in Scarborough, hence the ex in front of ex-pat!

What do I do now? I've been brought up to date by Michael who is moving back to Indonesia so do I add another Ex in front of his current status?! When I was in Singapore last October to visit my son and his family the Foreign Office advised us to keep away from Indonesia!
Michael must have had the same advice as he has relocated again! He is now living with his family in Qingdao which is somewhere in China and he's sent a couple of photos to show he's enjoying life there. Have a look at the Ex-Pats Gallery page.

Have you signed in on the Guestbook? There are plenty of people who know you and are just waiting to get in touch with you through this page! Do it now!! Sign in!

Now then you ex-pats, click below on Geordieland for a link back here. It's nowt to do with South Bank, in fact it's the writings of a Geordie, but I think you'll like it - not a lot - but you'll like it! (Thanks Paul)!

Malta

Ray Loughborough: I was talking to Joe Shackleton in the RAFA Club, Redcar. Joe was an Eston Grange lad and married Jean Loughborough from Upper Princess Street. I can't picture Jean in any way other than wearing wellies and a muffler which was how I used to see her going to their allotment on Skipper's Lane to feed the pigs and hens as I did the same at our allotments. (I know this has nothing to do with the Ex-Pats page but I'm getting to it!)

Joe was telling me that Ray lives in Malta (See!) and has been in residence there for about thirty five years! He was in the Merchant Navy for some years before transferring to the Danish Navy, then eventually left them and joined the Royal Fleet Auxillary. I thought I hadn't seen him around!

In the course of his career moves he married, had a family, divorced, and married again, this time to a Maltese girl, which was why he put down roots in Malta to where he eventually retired.

I'll bet he doesn't miss going up the allotment in the middle of winter!! By the way, Ray was a year older than me and wasn't a mixer but I knew his brother Norman who lives in Normanby somewhere and I thought I'd give him a mention. Hi, Norman!
