History of the reunions
 | The first reunion at The Magnet
The first reunion was at The Poverina and was Central Girls only. Then Marlene (Tranter) Dales became Landlady of The Magnet at Grangetown and arranged a Girls Only reunion which was a great success. I got caught up in the above photo when I went there at 10pm to pick up my wife Marion and came out at 2-30am!
I think Marlene held another two at the Magnet and then there was a gap before the further evolvement of the event when Sheila (Ryan) Crouchley put it on at The Normanby and made it All Central to include the boys(!) with guests also made welcome.
After another gap Marlene revived the reunion with help from Pam (Gatenby) Murtha and kept it at The Normanby which, it was felt, was an ideal venue and we've had a good run.
This year saw more growth with the widening of the "field" to include anyone who lived in Slaggy Island and promises to become a night to remember in the future so - watch this space! |

Cemetery Seat
 | The donated seat in the new part of Eston Cemetery
After the last re-union in The Normanby, the good attendance meant that after the room and disco were paid there was quite a surplus left. Therefore, an ornamental seat was purchased with an engraved panel and donated to Eston Cemetery in memory of all our friends who have beaten us to a plot. The seat has been set in the overflow (new) part of the cemetery and a close-up of the engraved panel can be seen in the next photograph. |

Engraving
 | A close-up view of the engraved panel
The engraving states that the seat was donated by old pupils of Victoria Street School as the reunion was originally for them. However there were quite a lot of other Slaggy Islanders in attendance because the concept of the reunion has grown so maybe after the next reunion we can get another seat "From Us Slaggy Islanders"! |

Crocus Carpet

I passed through the old cemetery on my way to photograph the "Central Seat" and couldn't resist taking a couple of shots of the crocuses. |

2005 REUNION
The reunion is on Tuesday October 4th. Be there - anytime after 7-30pm.
This reunion is for all old pupils of all the old schools of South Bank, fondly remembered as "Slaggy Island". (If you can remember the slagheaps you are welcome!)
There is a small entrance fee (£2) to cover costs with all the surplus going to charity. In previous years we have bought and installed a bench seat in Eston cemetery and donated to Middlesbrough Hospice and the Special Baby Unit.
The last two years the surplus cash was donated to Breast Cancer Research in 2003 and to Prostate Cancer in 2004 - to even up the score between boys and girls, so to speak!
The organisers are Marlene (Tranter) Dales and Pam (Gatenby) Murtha ably assisted by the lovely Barbara Wilson on the door.
Contact Marlene on 456585.
What I didn't include was Marlene's request for Raffle Prizes which will be appreciated. Cheers.
See you on the 4th. |
