21. Donny Foreman and Chinny Bell

Donny was in trouble at school one day when he jammed an inkwell into the exhaust pipe of teacher Chinny Bell's old Hillman. Somehow Chinny discovered the culprit and dramatically screamed "You could have killed me!" before savagely administering the cane.

Then, while still at the Central, Donny got a part-time job helping a milkman deliver milk and he got quite confident jumping on and off the float. One morning while delivering milk in Aire Street Donny took the chance of driving the milkfloat further along the Street, after all, he had seen the milkman often enough! He jumped behind the wheel and put his foot down, whereupon the float shot forward and crashed through the front bay window of a house.

It was said that the occupier was heard to remark, "They usually just leave the milk on the doorstep!"

22. Nobby Thompson and Ray Simms

This Central teacher was unfortunate to sport a large red nose earning him the nickname of "Nobby". One day Ray Simms got a seaside postcard showing a man with a large red nose and drew a speech bubble on it with the words "My name is Nobby!" He dropped the card on the floor and sat at his desk. Sure enough, as Nobby came in he spotted the card, bent down and picked it up, reading it.

Smoke practically came out of his nose as he raged on about it while the innocent looking Ray sat quietly in his seat!

Small Faces
John O'Neill of the Cardboard City website sometimes employs the trick of putting on two halves of a photograph to enable small faces to be more clearly recognised. If it's good enough for John then it's good enough for me - as witness the next two "half" photos of this choir!

Bill left a few gaps in the names which were filled in by Nick Featherstone who went to the Central but then passed the 13+ and transferred to Coatham. He therefore, as he put it, had a foot in both camps!

52. Old Boy

Spencer Hardwick 87 years young, in September 2004, Old Boy of Victoria Street School

Spencer Hardwick was a Normanby boy who passed the equivalent of the 11 plus exam or, as he put it, a test. The reward was to attend Victoria Street School which he had to walk to and from every day, come rain or come shine! No doubt he was glad to leave school in 1931 at the age of 15 but his fitness and longevity probably stems from the walking he did as a boy!

He then spent all his working life at Dorman Long's as a loco driver.

Spencer had come to see me with Tom Towers of the Normanby Local History Group with a request which I was able to help with. He is writing his memoirs and wanted a photo of his old school. I look forward to seeing his book when it comes out as he wetted my appetite with a few things I hadn't known - like this story!

Another tit-bit he gave me was what happened to the bricks when the old Town Hall was demolished in 1910! See South Bank Town Hall on the Old South Bank page.

Meanwhile Spencer has sent me a list of all his old teachers during his attendance between 1928 and 1931!
Headmaster...Mr.Bowes also known as Bertie The Barrel!
History/Music/Drama...Mr.Stevens aka Alfie.
Geography....Mr.Souter aka Pop.

Maths........Mr.Thompson aka Tommy.

Spencer added that the nicknames inferred no disrespect to their memory.
