1. The Vic Tote

Tote photos from Roy Millington

"Hi Dick
brilliant web site! Keep up the good work.
My family moved to South Bank from Grangetown 1960ish, both my parents were brought up on Birchington Avenue. We lived in Vaughan Street before moving to 42 Shinwell Crescent. My mother Dot Millington nee Robson worked at Welfords Bakery and my father John (Jack) (Miff) Millington worked at Cargo Fleet. My old man's local was the Victoria, over the road from the police station, every week he used to run the "tote" like a raffle only you picked your own numbers. Every year the proceeds from the tote were shared out at christmas to the local pensioners. My father was also secretary of the Cleveland Club on Mumby street.
The photo's were taken in the sixties in our house 42 Shinwell Crescent, there is over two thousand pounds on the table which in the sixties was a lot of money, all proceeds from the tote. My father is on the right hand photo, standing second from the right, the guy standing next to him is R Ward, don't know the others perhaps some of your readers might recognize them.
Thanks for the slaggy web site Dick
Regards
Roy Millington"

I received an email from Ann Breckon on the subject some time later (actually 21st April 2007)
"Hi Dick,
The chap sitting at the table in the picture The Vic Tote is Bill Lloyd, sadly now passed on, he married Audrey Shellard my cousin, who lived in Middle Princess St. She and her daughter Olwyn do very good work via The Whale Hill Neighbourhood Centre, in fact they both were invited to Buckingham Palace last year to the Queen's Garden Party, in appreciation for all the work they do for the Eston community,
Hope this is of some use to you,
Your number 1 fan.
Ann."

2. Smith's Docks Club Trip

Ready for the off!

Steve Gollogly in Canada sent two photographs of an outing of Smith's Dock Club members. He doesn't know where to or how many were South Bankers (he thinks quite a few) or even when the event took place but he does know that his Dad Frank is in the centre with a woman on his knee! If anyone can shed any light on the event or the trippers, please write in. On to the next photo...

5. Findlays Club Trip

Trip from Findlays in '60's. Photo from George and Margot Hunt.

George and Margot now live in Adelaide, Australia and Margot writes:
"Here is a club trip from Finlays in the sixties, does anyone know any of these people? My brother Peter Jones, now deceased, is in the white shirt, Colin Fisher on the right of him, with Dougie Dickinson back row second from end but I don't know any of the others. More to come. Regards Margot Hunt (nee Jones).

6. Erimus Drinkers

Erimus regulars in the '70's. Photo from George Hunt

George and Margot Hunt were regulars in the Erimus and Findlays before emmigrating to Adelaide, Australia. They still have fond memories of Slaggy Island and have e-mailed some photos of their "old days". Keep 'em coming, Folks!"Here is a pic from the Erimus Club in the seventies.
From the left: George Philpot, Alan Cropper, Bob Montgomery, myself George Hunt and Ray Butterwick - all South Bank lads! More to come -regards George and Margot Hunt."

7. Erimus Christmas

Christmas 1978. Photo from George and Margot Hunt.

"Here is a pic from the Erimus club Christmas 1978/ 79, from left George Brudnell, John Moore, Doughie Jones (my father)in brown coat with blue cardigan, Jimmy Hutchinson, Alan Cropper, Cyril Durnall with microphone, Ray Butterwick, George Milliard and Len ?.
Regards Margot Hunt (nee Jones).

8. Mystery Team

Another photo from John O'Neill

John O'Neill passed this pic on to me because he thought it might be a South Bank Football Team although it might be a pub or club team. Has anyone any thoughts on the matter?

9. Men In Black

John O'Neill provides another mystery

"Here's another Mystery Group of 13 men posing for the camera in a wooded area of South Bank(?). The man on the back row far right is one of my wife's relatives: Owen Meegan and next to him the tall man wearing the fedora hat is Mr Buxton Funeral Director Queen Street, South Bank......perhaps they were a Cricket Team ?
John"

There again, dressed in black they could be a team of pall bearers! Any ideas?

13. Albion or Peter's?

Another South Bank Club Trip. Photo from Pat Mackin.

Once again a South Bank Club is pictured on an outing. I think it is either The Albion or St.Peter's Club. No date or whereabouts either so any info will be appreciated.

The only two faces I can put names to are Tommy Wyke and Popsy Millington.

Note from Simon:
"Some more photographs for your site, this time for the "British Legion" section of which my grandfather (Jack Harris) was a long serving member.
These photographs are dated December 1957 and were taken when my grandfather retired as secretary of the South Bank British Legion. One shows him being presented with a gift by Mrs.Healey upon his retirement - it looks like a fireside brush and shovel set! The other is of him being presented with a Certificate of Honour for Long Service and also a Gold Badge for services to the pension work by Major Iveson with Jack Petford standing by."

Anyone know the piano player lurking in the background!?

Sunday Lunchtime At The Peter's

Tony and Colin Osborne in the lounge

It must be twenty five years since I was last in St. Peter's Club and I popped down to get a couple of pics for the website. It hadn't changed much although a few of the old faces had - as had my memory of names. Still, I was made welcome and enjoyed my time there and hope to return some time.
Chairman Derek Cross welcomed me like the prodigal son and showed me a treasured photograph of the England football team with Slaggy Islanders Wilf Mannion and George Hardwick. You can see it on the 1940's page!

It was seeing Tony at South Bank market that decided me on paying a visit only to see Tony sweating on every house!

25. Tommy Murphy Still At The Peter's

Ex Con (Sec) Tommy is third from the left

My memory of names flags a bit at times so I hope someone will write in with the other names. First left is Tony Sherridan the singer. (Thanks to Mike Greenup for a memory jogger.)

Peter Wilkinson At The Peter's

I was at Cromwell Road School with Peter in 1946 and only his hair has changed. I didn't realise what an old looking kid he must have been! (The jokes don't get any better).

The England Football Team 1946-47

This is the photo the Chairman showed me. I'm putting it here in case you can't be bothered going to the 1940's page.

England Team v Northern Ireland
28th September 1946, in Belfast.

L.Scott (Arsenal), N.Franklin (Stoke), Frank Swift (Manchester City), Billy Wright (Wolves), H.Cockburn (Manchester United).
Tom Finney (Preston North End), Raich Carter (Sunderland), George Hardwick (Middlesbrough), Wilf Mannion (Middlesbrough), Tommy Lawton (Everton), B.Langton (Blackburn).
England debuts for Hardwick and Mannion.
Mannion scored 3 goals in a 7-2 victory.
(Missing names, teams and additional information sent in by Harry Greenman. Thanks Harry!)

Wilf attended St. Peter's School and George Hardwick lived at 44 Aire Street although he had been born in Lingdale. Raich Carter managed the Boro years later.

The Vic Mystery

A group of Victoria Hotel clientele. Waiting for a bus?

Photo from Jimmy Collins
Way back Jimmy Collins gave me this photo taken outside the Vic in about 1950, he thought. We assumed it must be for an outing because of the women in the party. However I've been given some more photos of the same people which has made me wonder if we were right. I'll explain when you see the others after this.

In this group I must admit I recognise a lot of the faces but I can't put names to them other than Arthur Seed skulking at the back left and Jimmy Collins' Dad wearing the trilby.

Vic Male Group

Was this a club or Union that met in the Vic?

Photo from Angela Craddy (nee Lewis)
Jimmy Collins had given me a dog-eared copy of this photo but I've replaced it with Angela's because it's in better nick. Angela sent five Vic pics, this being the first, but no clue as to the event - unless the clue is in the rosettes being worn. (Arthur Seed is still skulking at the back).

The Vic Crowd and Bunting

Notice the bunting at the top. Could it be 1953?

Photo from Angela Craddy (nee Lewis)

What I like about this photo is the sight of Bell's paper shop in the background although I only remember Vic Bell, not Harry.

Now that I've studied these photographs I've realised that the last three have different personel which reinforces my belief that they are clubs, etc, meeting in the Vic. Pigeon Clubs or whatever. But I think this group are budding politicians.

Arthur Seed, still skulking at the back, was very manipulative and a big Union man. He got himself elected as Union Delegate and then persuaded the members that he could do a better job if he had no distractions like working for a living. They all kicked in to pay his salary - and insurance, etc..

Eventually he needed a bigger field of play and got himself on to Eston Council, using his powers of persuasion and more until he was chairman, after which there was no stopping him - pushing things through meetings which resulted in the South Bank of today. Nor is he alone. Even today people get on to councils with half-baked ideas resulting in decline in standards of living for the majority of us. What do you think? Who do you think killed South Bank?

Someone once said "If it isn't broken - don't fix it!" Why can't councils take that to heart?

Male Group Outside The Vic

I'm still puzzled so if anyone can shed a light I'd be obliged

43.The United

Mine Host John Porritt, Steward

I called in the United (Saturday 26/8/2006) to take in a couple of collection boxes from Redcar RAFA for the Wings Appeal as we approach Battle of Britain Day next month.
Old friend John Porritt was behind the bar and I hope his brother in New Zealand sees this!
It was just after mid-day and there were only a few in so I took a couple of pix...

44. United Clientele 1

However, sadly since this photo was taken, Norman Canwell passed away in early 2007.

Derek Skinn "at home" in the United Club

I hadn't seen Derek Skinn for about fifty years until I called in the United to see steward John Porritt and to take in a "thank you letter" from the Redcar RAFA for the United's efforts in collecting for the RAFA's Wings Appeal. As I turned from the bar to leave, a voice said "Ee, Dickie Fawcett!"
When I looked there was Derek Skinn sitting with a pint and, I swear, he hadn't changed a bit! Well, except for wearing glasses!
Mind you, he said the same about me which made me think I must have been an old looking kid!
We chatted for a little while before I had to leave, not realising that I wouldn't see him again (see the Farewell page). Still, I got a warm glow from renewing our aquaintance.

I left Dorman's before this trip on 24th March 1973 and so missed out. While most of these lads are from Grangetown some lived in South bank at different times. Certainly Bernie (I've forgotten his surname) lived in South Terrace and worked near me, manning the soaking pits "loco" and a few years later worked with me for P.J.Hopkins, Railway Contractors.

I said to Alf "How come you haven't got a Piss & Moan T-Shirt?"
He said "I don't moan"!

64. We supped some stuff...

Plenty of empties

Actually, it wasn't like that.
Acting on behalf of Redcar and District Royal Air Forces Association I had popped down to South Bank to award The Albion our "Certificate of Merit" for being our Top Club for collections for "Wings Appeal 2007".
Thank you to The Albion and all their members.

PS. I was well entertained by our friends in the Piss and Moan Club who covered all the subjects currently in the news in a clear, articulate and colourful manner and I'd like to see them being as forthright on TV putting the politicians in their place. Nice one, Lads.

65. Son of Don

John Reed in the Albion

"My Dad's on your site!" is how John introduced himself and I asked a tentative "How is he?"
Well, you never know at our age!
I'm glad to say that John said his Dad is fine. I don't think I've seen Don since the 60's and that is the page where his photo can be seen. I wonder if he's changed?

66. Captain Marvel!

Mel Dexter, Steward of the Albion Club 15 March 2008

Mel Dexter hails from Redcar but he is included on this website as an Honorary Slaggy Islander!
As part of my involvement with Redcar & District Royal Air Forces Association I started putting out collecting cans in various clubs and pubs in the area for our Wings Appeal 2006. At the time, our Chairman was very sceptical of cans going into South Bank but he was made to eat his words and apologise.
In 2007 the Albion was top club with a collection topping £100 after which our Chairman started bragging about "our" generous South Bankers!
After the 2007 Wings Appeal ended we put out letters to clubs asking if they would care to display our collecting boxes all year round and the Albion led the way in joining "The Few".
Since then, Mel and his Club have astounded us in the RAFA. We are only into March and they have collected almost £550 so far leaving us gob smacked!!
When I asked Mel how he did it, Ron Caswell, stood at the bar, leaned forward with his arm up his back! A good crowd in the Albion and good crack.
