1. Gimme That Old Time Religion
 | St. Peter's Church Memorial
Photo from Jackie Smith
A note about the statue from Michael McLoughlin in Brisbane, Australia:
"I refer to the photograph kindly supplied by Jackie Smith of the crucifixion cenotaph at St Peters Church South Bank. One can see by looking at this cenotaph - the feet of the crucified Christ are shattered. The cause of this was at the time that the South Bank Police Station was hit by a bomb during one of the air raids on the town - a portion of shrapnel hitting the feet. The cenotaph was erected in the early 1920's to commemorate members of the fighting forces killed during the 1st World War."
I had been asked to do a section on the religious establishments in South Bank which I'm happy to comply with because I never found the different sects to be a problem in my time although I know things were different in earlier days. If you want anything included here just write in. Nothing here will be in any particular order which, I suppose, is how it should be.
A man's belief is his own concern. |

The Old Mission
 | The Mission on North Street
Marjorie Formstone (nee Cox) asked about the Mission...
Well, the South Bank Mission was started on the 6th of December 1908 by the Reverend Oscar Allwright when a small group of people met in a room at number 9 Upper Princess Street. This venue soon became too small and the meetings were moved to Dr.McAvoy's back room. They moved again on the 6th of February 1910 to "Queen's Hall" which was in Albion Street but moved once more two years later to the Sales Rooms in Normanby Road.
After an approach was made to the council the group were given a piece of land on North Street, near the bridge to Smith's Docks and a permanent building was built and opened "for business" on the 16th of December 1914. Two local notaries present at the opening were Mr.Bosher and Dr.Steele.
A final move to a new building on Normanby Road was made on 17th of June 1967. |

The New Mission
 | Anne Carter's Wedding!
My eldest daughter had been looking at the site and asked why her and her siblings weren't on it as they also were South Bankers. So here's my chance to strike several birds, as it were, with one stone!
My sister Anne Carter got married at the "new" Mission in 1974 and my five daughters were bridesmaids as were the two daughters of my other sister Sylvia (nee Fawcett) Hall, and Eileen, the sister of groom Ron Mapplebeck.
L-R: Ruth Hall(now in NZ), Lorraine Fawcett(Leicester), Andrea Fawcett (Redcar), Alex Hall(NZ), Eileen Mapplebeck (Middlesbrough), Maxine Fawcett(Chester), Denyse Fawcett(Redcar), Julie Fawcett(USA), Anne Carter, Ron Mapplebeck. |

St. Peter's first church building
 | Photograph from Father Neil McNicholas
This first building later became the Parish Hall adjoining the original Presbytery and later still was the St. Peter's Social Club.
As an amateur photographer I particularly like the two kiddies playing beneath the old gas lamp standard. |

Crowds thronged for the official opening of the church and South Bank gained it's lasting (we hope) landmark. |

South Bank's major landmark, a beautiful church, viewed with pride by all Slaggy Islanders regardless of creed. And note again the gas lamp with figures below it. |

The Architect's Vision
 | The architect's drawing of the proposed St. Peter's Church.
Eddie Healy sent me this photocopy of the original architect's drawing which appears to have come from a magazine called "The Architect" and dated February 9th 1884. The architect was Martin Carr from Redcar. This layout would have resulted in South Bank evolving in a different way. |
|
My Version
 | The way it could have been - my fun mirror image for South Bank
This would have brought more symmetry to South Bank which could have been the Barcelona of the North! |

The Gangshow
 | 2nd South Bank (Baptist) Cub Pack Gangshow
Photo from Geoff Cunningham
Geoff adds: I remember we were drilled by an ex-drill sergeant from the Coldstream Guards in preparation for the Show.
We had our Cub hut in Shinwell Crescent next to the 3rd South Bank (St.Peter's) Cub hut as previously identified by Steven Gollogly.
I think 1st South Bank (St. Johns) held it's meetings in the hut behind the St.John's Church
On Redcar Road East. (We did! Dick.)
I have small photo somewhere with the full cast of the Gang Show so I'll search for it and forward it for Inclusion. Regards Geoff.

Photo from Peter Hughes
Peter sent this photo to show his policeman uncle Tommy Hughes but I recognise my next door neighbour from Aire Street Tommy Hart just in front of him whose lovely wife Louise was from Gibralta. Louise helped my wife at the birth of our second daughter Julie Louise.

30. Sister Ursula
 | Catherine McGarrell of Branch Street became Sister Ursula
Photos from Patricia Abel via Ged Fleming
Traditionally, the eldest daughter of Irish families left home to become a nun while the eldest son became a priest. Here we see Catherine as a modern (1930's?) miss and then in her nun's habit. |

In later years the photo's were taken by Harry Gallagher who had his photography business in Middlesbrough Rd and would display all the photo's in his window,so you could pick out which one you wanted to buy. 33. May Procession
 | Ged Fleming is Page to May Queen Eileen Murray
Photo from Ged Fleming
"For months before the big day, preparations were under way, after being chosen as a Page Boy to the May Queen. The velvet tunic velvet trousers and frilly silk shirt were made by a very kind lady, Mrs Heagney from Teesville and after many fittings we were ready for our big day.
After rehearsals the big day finally came and the May Queen, Eileen Murray, together with her attendants looked beautiful in her flowing white dress, veil and tiara. We all felt proud walking through the streets of South Bank.Back in St Peters, who can forget the procession down the aisle, when attendants scattered flower petals in front of the Statue of Our Lady as the congregation sang
'Bring Flowers of the Rarest'.The crowning of Our Lady's Statue was the climax on what had been a very memorable day. Ged Fleming" |

34. St. John's Church
 | On the steps of St. John's October 1949
In the Issue 71 of Remember When dated January 12 2008 were three photographs taken in the 1940's of outings from St. John's Church. They had been sent in by ex South Banker Mrs.E.Keating (nee Appleton) "now in her late 70's and living in Lincolnshire".
Mrs. Keating had been sent the photographs following the death of Father Allen who had been a curate at the church for many years. She said that she didn't want the photos returned and Remember When could do with them as they wished. They asked if anyone would like them and I sent in an email which resulted in my eventually receiving them.
The only details I have of this one is that it was taken in October 1949. Any names will be appreciated.
As all the photos were taken between 1946 and 1949 I am putting the other pics on the 1940's page. |
