The Fencing Class

Photograph from Barbara Harris (nee Williams)

This photo came via Terry Kelly who titled it "A Bevy Of Beauties" and who am I to argue with that?

The only names given are:
3rd from left Pat Lowery, Barbara Greenhow, Barbara Williams. The instructor isn't mentioned.

Wicksy's Inheritance

Kenny Wicks was the third owner of a well-washed pullover!

Around about 1945 when Kenny was about 7 years old, they put up decorations for Christmas in the hall and classrooms. Among them was a tiny Christmas tree, about 10" high including the base, which had decorations of a sort here and there. The colours after the drab war years caught young Kenny's eye and at the first opportunity it disappeared up his jumper. Later, he touched his mother's heart when he gave it to her as a present. Thereafter, every Christmas, the tree was brought out and displayed for the festive season.

When his mother passed on, Kenny inherited the tree which he still has to this day.

One of Kenny's son's, David, is an archeologist, indicating that he has inherited a love of old things so no doubt one day that little tree will be passing on to him. Who knows, it might even end up in a museum!!

Class about 1957

Photo from Pauline Williams in Oz.

I received this and the next photo by e-mail from Pauline Derham nee Williams who was born in Victoria Street next door to Winnie's Fish Shop. She moved to New Zealand in 1983 and then on to Perth in Australia in 1989. (I can understand moving from South Bank but moving from New Zealand?!)

I got the following e-mail from Jim Wentworth:
"My Father in Law is Billy Groves, and he has asked if I would forward these photos to you as you might want to incorporate them into your site."

The first photo was this one of a Cromwell Road class and the second was of the Worsley school at Grangetown. I checked for details and to see if it was the Jim Wentworth I knew of the Wentworth and Argument concern and he answered:

"Uncle Jim & Peter Argument owned the joiners shop, I'm Don Wentworth's son, so only guilt by association!! (only joking) As far as your question goes, Edie Earl (Groves) only went to the Worsley for one year before moving to South Bank, she did say there was another girl from South Bank on the photo but can't remember her name."

Because Edie Earl (later Groves and Jim's mother-in-law) was a Grangetown girl when attending the Worsley school I'm passing the photo on to my friend John O'Neil who hosts our "brother" site for Grangetown. To visit his site click on the blue Cardboard City below.

Miss Unthank's Class of 1955

Photo from Stewart McKenzie

Stewart is third from the right in the back row.
This photo brought back awful memories of the dreaded Miss Unthank's methods of instilling facts into the heads of her pupils.

Mrs Suffell's class of 60-61

Photo from George Tranter in Melbourne, Australia who wrote:

"The school photo was taken in 1961 or 1962, as far as I can remember, and features the then class of Mrs. Suffell outside the annex classrooms at Cromwell Road. The good looking lad on the far right at the back is yours truly.
Mrs. Suffell had the pleasure of teaching us for two years before we moved on to Mrs.Unthank in our final year of primary school.

Quite a few years after leaving Cromwell Road Primary School and in fact a few years after leaving South Bank for the sunnier climes of Marske-by-Sea I met Mrs. Suffell who was a Marske resident herself. She was really a nice lady, I do not know why we were all scared of her.

Have long ago lost all touch with the friends of my childhood (we moved to Marske when I was 11) but can remember some of their names.
To the best of my recollection the class list, allowing for spelling mistakes, reads...

The Boys, Back Row L to R: Reggy Brighton, Geoffry Palmer(?), Dennis Demoilly, Colin Bugg, Bob Allen, Geoffry Inkpen(?), Jimmy Darnell, ?,
?, Brian ?, Keith Street, George Tranter.

To my shame I can only remember two of the girls.
Janis Bollands (I think), third from right front row and Jennifer Iceton, far right on the front row.

Jennifer lived next door to us in Steele Crescent and Janis lived immediately over the road.

Any help with filling in the missing names would be appreciated.

25. Council Vandalism

Corner of Ann Street and Oliver Street which led to the school gate

The council have continued their policy of obliterating South Bank from the face of the earth by demolishing Cromwell Road School.
I don't know what condition the interior of the building was although it can't have been bad as the school had been revamped in recent years. However, from the outside, it appeared to be in good condition.
Such a public building would have made a perfect Community Centre with room for a variety of activities which would have improved the quality of life of the local inhabitants...
But, of course, the council don't want that. They don't want a return to the days when people were happy to live in the area.
People and houses are being replaced by trees and bushes (and weeds). I think its a poor swap. When I lived there, if I wanted to see trees I could go to Smiths Dock Park or up the hills. It didn't bother me that the streets had no trees.
Definitely a poor substitution.

26. Wasteland

Looking from Ann/Oliver Street corner to Cromwell Road and Victoria Street

Now there are trees. Big deal.

27. Walking the dog

Walking along Ann street past the Girls Gate entrance

In my day the gate was either bricked up or locked and never used - I can't say I ever noticed it although my class was in the annex (or old cookhouse) which was in the corner to the left (Ann Street/Oliver Street).

28. The Girls Gate

Now that I've noticed it you can have another view of it!

Complete with a clear view of Victoria Street.

29. Cromwell Road

30. Ann Street/Cromwell Road

Corner of Ann Street and Cromwell Road

The shop was once a bakery but has adopted many roles over the years.

31. Cromwell Road Tree

32. Daniels Emporium?

Paul Daniels old shop on the corner of Cromwell and Victoria Road

Paul definitely made the right decision when he gave up the shop!

I wasn't sure of my facts on this one - whether it was this corner or Pym Street corner. Still, I figured someone would keep me right! Then I got an email from Ann Breckon...
"Hi Dick, looked at the Cromwell Rd site I thought Paul Daniel's shop was on the corner of Pym St and Victoria St, the other shop was called The Dairy and Joe Vaughan had it, I might be wrong but just check it out,I started married life in Edward St and went to The Dairy as they sold Sands bread and ice buns, still love the site, keep up the good work, Best Wishes Ann Breckon."
That clinched it. I'm sure Ann is right. So my thanks to Ann and my appologies to Joe Vaughan!

33. The Old Vicarage

Opposite Paul Daniels shop was the St. John's Vicarage

Last time I looked it was flats but now its been taken over by the Council Housing Department. I can't see it having a long life.
