1. Ted Smith

A young Ted Smith

This page is going to take a while. I have so many photos to sort to get in order but I think it's worth the effort. This first piece in particular will be subject to change but keep looking in.

I considered Ted and his wife Mary friends. We weren't close but friendly enough to sit together in the Peter's on a Sunday night in spite of an age gap and share our Housey winnings.

When Ted Smith married Mary Welsh, the newly weds lived in George Street for a while before eventually moving to a new house in Bevanlee Road. Their family grew with the arrival of Marion, Ted, Jackie, James and Jeanne. Later, when the kids had fledged, Ted and Mary moved onto Normanby Road which was handy for the Peter's Club.

Ted had four great loves in his life the main one being his family as you can see on this photo. Next came his greenhouse where he nurtured his seedlings for the next season (he was even known to wrap his plants in a blanket to protect them in the winter!). His next love was the Peter's club where he was "on the committee" and was an excellent MC and bingo caller. But his fourth love spread his name further afield as he was an inveterate writer to the Gazette. I don't know how many letters he had published but it was a fair number.

I got a shock when Ted passed away and I was mortified to find that he suffered from depression and I hadn't known. He was a nice bloke and he had a lovely wife. I was glad I had known them.
Dick.

Ted's Blessing

Ted had written a note on the back of the last photo (taken in 1969) which had then been stuck in an album. Removing it had brought some of the black page off, hence the black dots.

Jackie broke another record when she became the first and only woman to be invited to join the famous Red Devils parachuting team giving exhibitions all over the world.

In the photo the Devils were training with The American Golden Knights Army Parachuting Team, one of whom, Bill Wenger dressed in black, joined in for the pic. Incidentally, Bill has remained a firm friend of Jackie and now works with the Air Force Academy in Colorado.

Ross and Jeanne

The bit of red in the bottom left corner is the elbow of Mark Richardson, Marion's grandson by her eldest daughter Mandy. Unfortunately, Jackie had missed off half of his head so I had no choice but to take off the rest!
She also said "Isn't he handsome?" but I couldn't possibly comment - at least not on half a head!
However, Mark has just joined the Army (Royal Artilllery) so we may get a pic in uniform to add to the Military Service page. If he does half as well as his Aunt Jackie he'll be okay.
Incidentally, this is the first time I've seen Jeanne since she was a toddler although I first saw her when she was two or three days old and her mother insisted on taking out an endowment policy for sixpence a week - and told me how to spell Jan!

63. Jackie now...

Jackie is on the right of this recent photo

South Bank's golden girl lives and works in Wiltshire but, as can be seen from this photo, still likes to keep her hand in with sky-diving pals.
She also enjoys photography and shows she is good at whatever she turns her hand to. Her photos can be seen on her own website in blue at the bottom of here...

65. Jackie - Photographer

A portrait by Jackie

I can't leave this without showing two of Jackie's photographs. I have been into serious photography since 1968 taking and seeing literally millions of pictures and I think all Jackie's photos are terrific but in particular I think the two that I am showing are absolute winners.
You can judge for yourself on her website.

66. Wow!

"Ray of Light" by Jackie Smith. What a fantastic photograph!

67. 1971

Jackie twiddles her hair, centre

Jackie labelled this photo "A blast from the past"
but the only details with it are "RAPA 1971".
