1a. Bernard Fleming
 | Bernard in his first pose as a professional footballer in 1957
I received an email from Peter Fleming from his home in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania about his cousin Bernard which inspired a new page!
From the Peter’s to the Mariners
Bernard began his football career playing with Normanby Athletic juniors and both St. Peter’s junior and senior school teams in the early 1950’s. He later made appearances for Redcar Albion, playing alongside team mate Terry Bly. Bernard went on to captain the Middlesbrough & District Junior League side against the North Riding Boys Clubs XI winning 4-1.
In 1955 Bernard joined the RAF to complete his National Service. While serving, he played for Bomber Command and for RAF Binbrook which at that time had a number of professionals on the team including George Brown who was a centre forward for Bishop Auckland FC. It was during this time (1956) that he was spotted by Grimsby Town FC and was asked to go for a trial.
He was accepted and began playing for Grimsby Town FC in April 1957 and spent the next 5 years playing there before eventually moving off to teams like Workington AFC,(1961-2) Chester FC, (1962-4) and later non-league Winsford Utd.(1964-5). In all, he made 232 first team appearances and played in the FA Cup, the League Cup, the Welsh Cup and a number of local county cups. He completed his professional career in 1965.
Some highlights of his career were the two games he played in Czechoslovakia against that nation’s World Cup team and the two games he played at Ayresome Park against Boro’ sides that included Clough, Day and Hodson all during the 1958-59 seasons.
Bernard progressed in his football career by moving back to Grimsby Town in 1970 and worked for nine years as Youth Team Manager with such notables as Lawrie McMenemy, John Newman, Ron Ashman and Tom Casey. He played a large part in the development and progression of many young players.
He eventually became a scout himself and was on the lookout for fresh young talent, scouting for Southampton, Grimsby Town, Peterborough and Darlington football clubs.
He became Company Secretary of Grimsby Town FC in 1982-86 then became Company Secretary of Southend in 1987 until 1988.
Bernard hailed from Surrey Street, South Bank and now lives in Cleethorpes with his wife Madeleine. They have been married for over 46 years and have a daughter Julie, who lives in Phoenix, Arizona, USA and a son Ian, who lives close by in Cleethorpes. Ian is now Company Secretary of Grimsby Town FC.
Following are more photographs of Bernard and team mates.

2a. Peter Martin
No Pix
Taken from the googlemail box...
"Hi! I'm Peter Martin,I've tried 3 times to get into your site(Guestbox), but when I 'submit' it tells me the sign in No, is different, after the first attempt, I was extra carefull, but still can't get in,hence this E-mail.
I was born in Surry St, [John Tipp lived just round the corner] at 4yrs of age we moved to Pym St,[120] and attended St Peter's.
I got married in '57 and moved to L Albion St. In '68 moved to Westfield Close Normanby, and in '71 went to the Dominican Republic on a 3yr job and stayed 33yrs!
Back to UK in '04 and am now in Redcar. My brother Brian also is here and we get together Mondays and Fridays for a few pints. Our local being Dene's Grove Conservative club.
Brian's mates were Colin Dales, Taffy Westcough, Tony Boyes - the rest don't come to mind.
My mates were Neil Cleneghan, Derek Saunders, Alan Dawson, Alan Winton, Tony Fleming, Tommy Riley.
I left the Peter's, in 52, some of my school mates, Jimmy Duffy, Kenny Hanlon, John Pallister, Jim Best, Michael (Nobby) Clark, John Williamson, John Harrison, Tony Phillipson, and the girls... that year we had the best lookers. Of them all,Peggy Lennagan, Nosher Snowball, Veronica Hollywood, Maureen Havelock...
Mind the Central had its share, Marlene Tranter(tried to call but no answer) 'Babs' Wilson, (still lovely). "There's nowt wrong with the Slaggy Island air" to have gotten such "LOOKERS"!
Does anybody get together on a regular basis, annually seems a long time to wait, if so, let me know, I'd like to catch up. Well that's it for now, if you can, get this onto your site for me. Thanks, Peter."
