1. Boarded Up

End of 2007 and the cop shop is boarded up to keep out the vandals

Hm, I wonder if young vandals grow up to be councillors?

2. Going...

February 2008 and the demolition has started

Coincidentally and symbolically a funeral was in progress at St. Peters Church.

3. Front View

Another nail in the coffin of South Bank

4. Authorised Vandalism

Words are inadequate

5. How Long?

How long before the other buildings in this photo join the cop shop?

6. Memorial

Lets hope the council keeps its hands off St. Peter's Church

7. Gone

A fine building - gone but not forgotton

8. Tombstone

A pause in demolition leaves a temporary gravestone

9. Obliterated

Is this the end of South Bank - or the beginning?

4th March 2008. I went down to South Bank to see the ground being cleared and asked if there had been a foundation stone anywhere but none had been seen.
I talked to one of the workers who was certain that 25 "timber frame flats" were going to be built on the land. Personally I'll believe that when I see it. The Council has repeatedly said that they can't get anyone to build on the South Bank "brown field" site and that's why they are going to build at Low Grange Farm on the Trunk Road. Interesting to see who's lying!
Incidentally, I said to my informant that it was a shame that such an impressive building should be demolished but he said he personally was glad it had gone, having seen the inside of it before today!

10. Central Site

Pensioners flats built on the Central site demolished

On the 7th of March 2008 I had to visit The Albion and heard that they were knocking down the flats that were built on the site of Victoria Street School so I went round Hampden Street to have a butchers. Sure enough, a pile of rubble marks the spot.
I can't remember when the Central was pulled down and those flats built but they hadn't been up that long. Certainly not what you would expect the life of any building to be.
What's their game? The council have repeatedly said that no one wants to build on "brownfield sites" like this, so why destroy good flats that cost "How much?"

11. "Central Flats"

Central Flats flattened

13. View of the Peter's

Looking up Victoria Street from Hampden Street

14. Blot on the Landscape

15. Warwick Street

"... there was Warwick Street - gone!"

When I looked around I found that Warwick Street had disapeared!

16. Ann Street

Then I found that Ann Street had also gone

Left on the corner, what was once our corner shop - the Co-op where, in 1946, I saw my first tinned fruit on display in the window! Stacks of large tins of Grapefruit!!

17. Scarborough Street Exposed

Ann Street gone leaving an open expanse from Victoria to Scarborough Streets

18. Queen Street

Druggies and vandals helped the council to kill this street

In its place the council has spent money to grow a bit of grass and fence it in with a fancy arch and name - Millenium Green! A fancy place for dogs to crap. And beyond that, between Queen Street and Aire Street, a "work of art". A cast iron door which cost how much? and is used as a pissoir!
Where do these councillors live? There is something wrong with a system that has people living outside the area making decisions affecting the lives of others.
