MARK TRAINORS DREAM
| MY NAME IS MARK TRAINOR AND I FORMED THIS FOOTBALL CLUB IN THE SUMMER OF 2002 AFTER YEARS OF TOYING WITH THE IDEA. I HAD GOOD RESPONSE FROM LOCAL PLAYERS AND MANAGERS AND DECIDED THAT THE STOKESLEY LEAGUE WOULD OFFER ME THE BEST OPPORTUNITY TO ESTABLISH A SENIOR SATURDAY SIDE WHICH HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE THE DAYS WHEN I FOLLOWED SOUTH BANK FOOTBALL CLUB HOME AND AWAY FOR SIX YEARS. AS WELL AS SUPPORTING THEM I WORKED IN THE SUMMER GETTING READY FOR NEW SEASONS (PAINTING,CLEANING ETC) TO HELPING GET THE PITCH READY FOR MATCHDAYS AND WORKING IN THE BURGER BAR OR ON THE GATE. AS YOU CAN SEE THIS MEANT SO MUCH TO ME AND TO HAVE IT TAKEN FROM THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH BANK I HAVE ALWAYS SAID THAT I WOULD BRING FOOTBALL ON A SATURDAY BACK TO THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH BANK. WE STARTED IN MAY 2002 TRAINING AND GETTING THE LADS TOGETHER AND WITH THE HELP OF THE STEWARD OF THE SOUTH BANK UNITED SOCIAL CLUB(WHERE I WAS ALSO THE SPORTS SECRETARY) WE STARTED RAISING FUNDS THROUGH RAFFLES AND BLIND CARDS AND WE GOT ENTERED INTO THE LEAGUE. THE NEXT STEP WAS TO OBTAIN A STRIP THIS WAS KINDLY BOUGHT FOR US BY THE SBUSC. WE WERE THEN READY TO GET PREPARED FOR THE SEASON. IT IS NOW MARCH 2003 AND WE HAVE OBTAINED OUR SECOND STRIP COURTESY OF THE SRB. (FOR OUR RESULTS AND STORIES SEE LINKS) | |

Season 2002-2003 Summary
Our 1st ever season has come to a close and all of us at the club cannot believe what we achieved an impressive 7th position in the league which included an 8-1 victory away at North Skelton with Anthony Reed bagging four, 4-1 and 5-2 victorys over a Grenadier side tipped for honours at the start of the season and also the double over Ennis Square 2-1 and 3-0 also a great 6-4 victory over well fancied Post Office and not forgetting that 14-4 win over Black Horse all in all a great foundation to start from.
In the North Riding Cup we had a win over Lingdale United to set us up with a tricky away tie at Edgehill Scarborough who were on a 39 match unbeaten run till they met us we beat them 4-2 goals from Reed, Strange and Cousins. We fell at the next hurdle to Brotton WMC 9-1 but we had a wonderful day out and result to match.
We reached the League Cup semi-final beating Bulls Head and Stockton Elementis en route and faced League leaders Thornaby Mandale and more than matched them in the 1st half creating a few chances of our own and went in 0-0 at the break but in the end Mandales experience from set pieces gave them a 3-0 victory but we were never outplayed at any stage and battled as a team throughout.
Having got knocked out of the Arthur Reed Shield 5-3 by St Marys College OB we were thrust into the Wilf Leader Trophy and two back to back 3-1 victories against Coulby Newham and North Skelton set us up for the Final Against Woodmans Arms at Great Ayton a fantastic support and a great team effort brought the trophy home 2-1.
So there it is season 1 of South Bank United FC a lot more stories will unfold over the coming seasons and I can not wait | |
