The Story of the Season
 | In the league we finished 7th for the second season in sucession but beat our previous points total finishing with 49 points. Highlights of our league programme included our 1st two games in which we scored 21 goals with Anthony Gregory scoring 10 of them. Finally getting one over on our close rivals SPR after drawing our 1st meeting. A lot of disappointing draws in games we should have won including 4-4 draws with Thornaby Mandale and Thornaby Village 3-3 draws with Woodmans, Coulby Newham and eventual Champions Middlesbrough Post Office also 2-2 with South Park Rangers and Coulby Newham if points were not dropped in these games we would have been up there with the Challengers.
The season ended on a high with three good wins 3-2 against a good St Marys side, a 7-3 thrashing of Thornaby Village and a 13-1 demolition of British Steel Sports. All in all thoroughly entertaining games but no good for the ticker. Our goals against column is an area to be looked at and steps have already been made to remedy this for the season to follow.
In the North Riding Cup another good run but all at home so no away days this season1st we disposed of Lingdale United for the second season running 6-4-(aet) with a wonder goal from John Webster sealing victory. Then we took Middleham Town to a penalty shoot out after a 2-2 draw with Peter Truscott running in a man of the match performance in the shoot out we prevailed by 4-2.
In the next round we faced our Carperby Rovers 3-3 after normal time and 5-3 down with a minute to play when Popeye popped in two late late goals taking his tally to 4 in the game. But our luck finally ran out when losing in a penalty shootout. Carperby showed their class in reaching the semi finals only to lose out to eventual winners Dormans F.C.
In the League cup we defeated our rivals SPR 3-0 Then we beat Linx Hemlington on Penalties after ANOTHER eight goal thriller, we reached the League cup semis for the 2nd year running and played the form team in the league Kings Head who had defeated us 3-0 2 days before, we took an early lead but were trailing 4-2 at the break a great 2nd half performance from my boys pulled it back to 4-4 and 2 mins from time we got knocked out by a goal from former South Bank player Brian Crawley totally against the run of play. In the Arthur Reed Shield we beat Coulby 2-1 with goals from Webster and Strange before losing to St Marys College 2-0 in Round 2.
As you can see life is never dull in the life and times of a South Bank Supporter so why not come along for the ride Next Season. We will be playing at St Peters School for our home games see local press for further details. |
