Burness Plate Winners 2008
After coming top of our 4 team group stage and beating Teesside Athletic 2-0 in the semi final we reached our 1st Cup Final in our Debut season in the Jack Hatfields Teesside Football League.
The Final was held at Guisborough Town Football Club on Monday 21st April 2008 and our opponents were our local rivals North Ormesby who were sitting on level points at the top of our division.
We were at near full strength with only John Lodge missing due to work. The game itself started at a frantic pace and we looked dangerous from the off with our pacy forwards causing havoc and our defence solid as a rock.
We should have took the lead earlier than we did when a Glenn Wesson cross was nodded home by Anthony Gregory but the linesman had other ideas and raised his flag for offside, however it did not take us long to open the scoring and we did through ANTHONY GREGORY who slotted home after the Keeper palmed an earlier shot into his path. Ten minutes later the crowd we sent into raptures when the fantastic GLENN WESSON got the ball about 20 yards out and unleashed a ferocious drive into the top corner for 2-0. We made sure that we did not sit on this lead as we had done previously and our defence of Mark Phillips,Terry Mcclaughlin,Jason Lappin and Daniel Prest were fighting like warriors to maintain our lead, our midfield of Matty Hammerton,Paul Venis,Anthony Reed and the mercurial Glenn Wesson did not let them get a touch of the ball never mind settle North Ormesby were struggling to cope with the pace that we were playing at and after a few earlier chances ANTHONY REED raced on and put the result beyond doubt with a cool finish into the far bottom corner for 3-0.
We could and should have added to the scoreline at halftime Gregory slid the ball past the keeper only to see it come back off the foot of the post. HALFTIME NO 0 ST PETERS 3
In the 2nd half we knew that North Ormesby had to throw the kitchen sink at us to try and get back into the game but our defence were magnificent including our young Keeper Craig Beckett who was in command all evening the game was put to bed with 10 minutes to go Substitute Graeme Watson ran to the byeline cutting inside 2 North Ormesby defenders before laying the ball back for ANTHONY GREGORY to seal the win with a cool finish from 10 yards out.
