Attention all club members aged 35 and over,both men and women!!!!
Want to help us to defend our vets TITLES this summer?????
Come and join us down at monkton stadium for regular meetings
throughout the summer and help us defend our titles(men and women)
that we worked hard to win last year. Its a track and field event and
we need as many people as possible to cover all T&F categories.
Check out the VAANEE website and if interested go to the link for
becoming a member. Members from last year,have you renewed your
memberships for this year?
Any problems or questions just give me a buzz or send an email.

Due to Brian having registered a score=draw with his computer
this week, the Gazette received his column, but I did not. So you will
not read about Matthew Wakefield's U/11 win in the Xcountry; the
senior Xcountry team being 4th overall; or the o/65 flying coffin team
(Bob Balmer/Arthur Potter/Ken McDonald) being 5th at the National
Masters' Xcountry champs in their age group - unless you wait for
Gypsy or take desperate measures and buy a Gazette.
Reminder about the club's SandDancer 10k, April 10th. Over 90
entries now received, but not many from our members.Entry forms at
club or let me know if you want one - for the race which is the
successor to the oldest Harrier team race in the world (original route
from Sunderland to Westoe).
Reminder to Vets. *Check the Vets' website. Dates of T&F
meetings, May onward, and date of T&F champs, seem to have changed.
Also there is a new race at Bamburgh which is the Vets 10 road champs.

Hi all,
Received email from Phil at Sunderland Strollers reference usual assistance with start of Pier to Pier. He is hoping, as usual that our club members will be able to help with the start and some marshaling of the run.
Could any members who are able to help with the start of the run let me know asap so can let him know how many will be available.

Luke Clark from South Shields Harriers has been selected to represent the North Eastern Counties in the London Mini marathon on sunday.Clark the N E C C champion is on the under 15 boys team with Sunderlands Chris Peverley in the three miles race against athletes from all par ts of the country.Birtley's brilliant youngster Lydia Turner is also expected to reach a high position in the under 15 girls race.Clark is in action at 9.30 am before the massive crowds assembled for the Flora London Marathon.
Wallsend Harriers hold their Rising Sun Mixed Terrain Run on sunday at 10.30 am.Th e five miles event is held on a traffic free course through the grounds of the Rising Sun Country Park
Hannah Briggs from Jarrow and Hebburn A C was second three times in the final Gateshead Winter Indoor Standards meeting in mid-week but finished under 17 girls champion in the six monthly series.Briggs recorded 10.11 in the 60m hurdles as Rachel Sco tt of Houghton was first in 9.9.79. riggs and her team-mate Emma Grant reached the same height of 1.40 as Sco tt in the high jump but Scott won on a countback with briggs second again.In the long jump Grant was the winner with 4.55m with B riggs two cm down.Briggs won the title with 52 points from Scott's 47 with Grant third on 37.Anthony Hogg from the Jarrow club finished fi rst in the under 15 boys 60m in 7.81 ahead of Gateshead's Reuben Cole with 7.96.However in the series Alnwick's Peter Skirrow won with 70 with Hogg second with 52.Zara Teasdale was second in the under 13 girls long jump with 3.57m and finish third overall with 38 points.Lucy Turner who left Jarrow for Gateshead was third in the under 15 girls table with 37.Jarrow's James Lovatt finished third with 7.37 in the senior men's 60m won by Gateahead's Ben Porter in 7.22.James Andrew was second in the B race in 7.31.Michael Briggs from South Shields Harriers was fourth in 7.56.Katie Corner now at Gateshead finished second in the under 20 women's 60m hurdles in 9.85.Jarrow's Katherine Bulmer won the under 20 shot with 10.84m.Jarrow's Emma Johnson was fourth in the under 15 girls long jump with 4.86m.

17th April/Brians column

Brians column follows. Junior Times for South Shields Athletes in Sand Dancer attached and also some amazing results in weekends run. Special mention in competitions to top club senior Luke Adams winning Wallsend Rising Sun 5 Mile and top club junior Luke Clark a formidable 22nd overall in London Mini Marathon U15s.
Note that Bob Graham Round 24 Hour Challenge by six of our clubs determined athletes is confirmed as Saturday 25th June and they'd greatly appreciate any support.
Well done all, we can all be very proud as we grow stronger as a club.

Brians Column
Luke Adams from South Shields Harriers stormed to a resounding victory in Wallsend Harriers Rising Sun Five Miles Race on sunday.Adams was in the early breakaway group in the Rising Sun Country Park but after the first mile Paul Turner of Elswick winner of the Sand dancer at South Shields last week made a decisive move.However Adams responded and as the pair moved clear of their rivals it was Adams who gained control.Moving clear into the third mile he had a 40 yars lead at the halfway point.Continuing to forge ahead Adams increased the gap on the final lap finishing 41 seconds in front of Turner with 27:02.C hris muir was 10th in 29:34 with B en Forster 11th in 29:46 as Shields were comfortable team champions ahead of Sunderland and Elswick.George Arthur was 13 th for Shields in 30:09 and third veteran over 45.David W akefield only 16 was first junior in 16th with 31:26.James Ford from Jarrow and Hebburn A C finished 36th in 36:07.
Liam Emmett only 14 from South Shields Harriers finished an excellent third against seniors in the Sunderland Park Run on saturday.Ian Twaddle of North Shields set a new record of 15:40 for the5km onthe hilly course over the winding paths through the Silsworth Sports Complex with liam Taylor of Sunderland Strollers second in 16:07.Emmett recorded 18:16 with his father Kevin fifth in 18:57 and first over 45.Matthew Wakefield only 10 was prominent in 10th with 19:44.Gary McAlinden finished 17th in 20:41 and was second veteran over 40.Dave Whitmore completed a successful day for the Shields club with 47th position in 27:21 taking the over 70 award.
Hebburn's Jeff Henderson finished 54th in 20:58 and third veteran over 40 in the Newcastle Park Run on saturday.Morpeth's Ian Harding was first with 15:10 over the Town Moor paths.

Luke Clark from South Shields Harriers finished a prominent 22nd in a huge field of 3000 in the Virgin London Mini Marathon on sunday.Clark in the under 15 boys section was the second counter for the North Eastern team recording 16:03 for the winding three miles encouraged by the massive crowrds assembled for the Virgin London Marathon later in the morning.Charlie Pascoe from Teesside was first area athlete finishing 18th in 15:57.
Elswick Harriers stage their Good friday Road Races at Newburn with South Shields Harriers out in force through the age groups. Expected athletes to compete are Luke Adams,Chris Muir,Ben Forster and Jak Watson go for the senior men's 4x 2.2 miles relay. George Arthur to lead a strong veterans team with support from George Bainbridge David wakefield and Kevin Emmett. Linda Bone expected to go for the senior vets women's title over 2.2 miles. Luke Clark defends his under 15 boys title again over 2.2 miles with Liam Emmett also capable of being amongst the medals.David Wakefield should be in contention in the under 17 boys 2.2 miles event along with Michael Todd. With seven races on the programme the under 13 girls 1.1 miles race starts the action at 11.00 am.changing,registration and the presentation are in One North East building Belles Close.NE15 8QA

South Shields' Kathryn Foley now competing for Morpeth was a
convincing winner of the over 35 women's race in the North Eastern
Veterans Cross Country Championships at Whitley Bay on saturday.Foley
in only her second race after a six months abscence moved clear of
her rivals over the flat 6km event finishing eight seconds ahead of
Tynedale's Fran Little in 23:1.
Linda Bone from South Shields Harriers was nine seconds behind
Heather Robinson of Chester le Street in fourth with 23:42 but
achieved the over 35 silver medal.
Bob Balmer from the Shields club won the bronze medal in the over 65
men's 6km with 27:43.Arthur Potter was seventh in 29:16 with
Malcolm Stephenson eighth in 30:56 as Shields were first team.
Ken McDonald was 11th in 34:44 with Frank Strand 13th in 35:42 and
Bob Pinkney 14th in 39:52 giving Shields the silver team medals.
In the 9 km race for over 40's Morpeth's Paul Waterston held off
Sunderland's Brian Bewick to win by 15 seconds in 30:30.Shields Mike
Jones was nninth in 32:49 and fifth over 45.C hris McDonald was 18th
in 34:23 and fifth over 40.Kevin Ayres finished 25th in 35:55 and
eighth over 45.Ed wilson was 30th in 37:55 and third over 55.Alan
Bone was 38th in 43:12 and fifth over 60.
David Wakefield and his son Matthew from the Shields club travelled
to Brenwood on sunday to compete in the half marathon and junior
runs.David was a prominent 32nd in the huge field of 2000 in 1:23.26.
Matthew only 10 in the 5km race including athletes up to 17 years old
was an impressive 10th in the field of 500 recording 18:27 taking
first place in the under 13 section.
Luke Clark from the Shields club finished second Durham counter in the
intermediate race in the Aviva English Schools C C Championships at
Nottingham on saturday.Clark was 100th in the field of 320 with 19:26
for the 6km with James McMurray of Herts first in 17:40.Tristan Peel
from Jarrow was 236th for Northumberland in 20:31 with Shields'
David Wakefield 259th in 20:43.Durham were 24th from 44 teams.
Shields' Liam Emmett finished fourth for Durham with 159th ín
the junior event over 4km clocking 15:23.Jarrow's Thomas C oyne was
229th 15:44 as Thomas Holden of Surrey collected gold with
13:38.Durham finished 20th from 42 teams.Hebburn's Lawrence McC ourt
was 88th in the senior boys 8 km in 23:01.Jarrow's Shaun B arrass
finished 112th in 23:24 with George Lowry 162nd in 23:57.Kieron
Clements of Suffollk finished champion with 20:50.Durham were 14th
team from 41.Jarrow's S arah McDonald was 117th for N orthumberland
with 16:59 in the senior girls 4km.Jenny Walsh of west Yorkshire
finished first in 14:37.
