Daily Prayer

Much of the prayer of the Church of England is corporate, that is to say we do it together and this is reflected in much of what you will say when you recite Morning Prayer or Evening Prayer. Yet there is another side to our prayer life, our own individual prayers, as we try to share in Christ's prayer to his Father, that his will be done, his kingdom come.

The advice we provide here was originally written for a children's book. However, whether you are a child, young person or an adult, prayer is easier than you might imagine! Millions of people of every age pray every day.

You don't have to know any prayers if you want to pray - in fact, words can often get in the way. Picture Jesus, and then say what is in your heart, what you feel.

Remember!
God hears every prayer - but not all prayers are answered in the way we might expect or desire: we don't always pray for his will to be done!

How to Start

The Church of England gives some useful advice on how one should start to prayer. The following is a brief extract

How to start?

Use your hand.

Your fingers can be used to bring to mind different things to pray for.

thumb
this is the strongest digit on your hand. Give thanks for all the strong things in your life, like home and family, relationships that support and sustain you.

index finger
this is the pointing finger. Pray for all those people and things in your life who guide and help you. Friends, teachers, doctors, nurses, emergency services and so on.

middle finger
this is the tallest finger. Pray for all the important people who have power in the world, like world leaders and their governments, members of parliament and local councillors, the Royal Family, other world leaders and their governments.

ring finger
this is the weakest finger on your hand. It can not do much by itself. Remember the poor, the weak, the helpless, the hungry, the sick, the ill and the bereaved.

little finger
this is the smallest and the last finger on your hand. Pray for yourself.

Parish Prayer

Almighty God

Whose Church on earth is a sign of your heavenly peace,

An image of the new and eternal Jerusalem:

Grant to us in the days of our pilgrimage

That, fed with the living bread of heaven,

And united in the body of your Son,

We may be the temple of your presence,

The place of your glory on earth,

And a sign of your peace in the world;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayers for Sunday 16th January 2005

Let us pray for the world and let us thank God for his goodness. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, you promised through your Son, Jesus Christ, to hear us when we pray in faith.
May we be true to your calling. May we be worthy of our calling. Open our hearts and our minds to see Christ in everyone and to love as he loves us.

Lord, in your mercy.

We praise you for the wonder of interstellar space, for the many dimensions of your creation. We marvel at the pictures of Saturn’s moon Titan,. We see what our own world perhaps was like in its youth. May we deal wisely with it in its middle age: this fragile earth threatened with global warming, biological and nuclear warfare.

Lord, in your mercy.

Comfort and heal all who suffer in Iraq, Palestinians and Israelis, in many countries in Africa. Comfort and heal those affected by the tsunami. Comfort and heal those we know who are ill. And all who are bereaved. May your healing hand be upon all who suffer to give strength and salvation.

Lord, in your mercy.

We pray for the departed. Those whose lives have been taken from them. Those we know who have died. And those whose anniversary of death is at this time. According to your promises, grant us with them a place at the eternal banquet.

Lord, in your mercy.

Rejoicing in the fellowship of all your saints, we commend the whole of your creation to your undying love. Merciful Father

Sunday School Prayer - Sunday 27th November 2005

Dear God and Dear Jesus

If we ask for help, for example if we ask our neighbours to look after our house while we go on holidays, they should help us but if we don’t say please they might not. If they don’t look after our house, your church, help us to forgive and look for the day of you return

Amen
